Does Sharepoint store scanned images as part of a database?
Clarification added 1 month ago:
How are the files then indexed and found? My understanding is that the files themselves are named and therefore can only be found by that name (w/no additional indexing). To then find the file, the user would go the the Picture Library and select the "details" view which would give display the file type, name, picture size, and file size. Is my understanding correct? Does anyone have suggestions on how multiple index values could be created and then searched (without the values being one long file name)? Thank you.

Yes, SharePoint does store the image in the SQL Server database. You can buy third party products that will enable storage outside the database (ie shared directory, RAID or optical drive).
SharePoint supports indexing metadata fields within any Office 2003/2007/2010 document, but scanned images are a little different. You can index a scanned image into SharePoint but there is a challenge in having the index panel AND the scanned image open at the same time (you need to see the scanned image while indexing in order to index it correctly). We use third party products (ie KnowledgeLake www.knowledgelake.com) to do this.

Everything in Sharepoint is stored in the SQL Server Database.
From the user point of view, documents are stored in document libraries. Scanned images could be stored in Picture Libraries. I suggest googling Sharepoint Picture Libraries for more information.
Hello Oscar, SharePoint allows for user friendly addition of attributes - or MetaData. For clarification SharePoint is powered by a database, and retains some of the same functionalities but is driven by a GUI interface. Are you uploading these pictures or automatically scanning them in? If you are uploading them create the metadata by adding columns - i.e. a color column where the choice is 32, 16, or black-white. A topic column where the choices are business, pleasure, etc. The search will automatically pick up these extra values and/or you can set-up advanced search to search the meta-data directly
