The term"in the zone" is a sports expression, and generally means that one is "hot", and can't miss. Used in the work context, it suggests that they are performing exceptionally well.

Perhaps they are following the Zone diet? (Just kidding.)

It's a curious phrase, in that it's unrelated to any email-related terms I'm aware of. It could mean just about anything.

in writing and speech in geneal being "in the zone" means being completely focused on a task (sport or other) where nobody can touch or change your behaviour or process. Usually related to performances of any discipline it's a positive "place to be" . I don't think that email brings a different meaning to it

It probably means you're reading SPAM... or an email from a college buddy... which is effectively SPAM most of the time...

I'll agree with Ken, "in the zone" work related stands for the person performing beyond expected.
