Vista - Error 1406 - Does anybody have a solution!
Hello,
I have been going through the internet, looking at all the support sites, trying to find a solution to the problem of not being able to install Office 2007 on my windows vista machine.
This seems to be a very common problem so I am hoping someone in LinkedIn network has connections in Microsoft and a real answer can be found!
Those of you thinking of going to Vista, be aware security is so tight that you run into hundreds of install / set up problems.
My problem the "Error 1406" is that Microsoft's office 2007 install program can write to Microsoft registry as I don't have sufficient permissions although I am an administrator on PC. Very strange!
So any answers would be useful or if enough people have same problem maybe the collective power of LinkedIn might get an answer from MS!

If you run manually rather than use the autorun on cd insert, right click the executable and see if you can select 'run as administrator'.

Did you try disabeling UAC ? You can do this in the users pane of the config panel

If you have already followed the suggestions to disable UAC and "run as" Administrator, and you are still having trouble, I would also suggest verifying that a third-party application is not preventing changes to be made to the registry. Do you have an AV suite or anti-spyware program running when you are attempting to perform the installation? Disabling any type of program similar to this prior to installation might be the answer. Try logging in using the "Administrator" account instead of your account (that has administrative rights) to isolate if it's a problem with user rights.

where there's a similar problem to what you've mentioned.
Unfortunately, the solutions are suggested for XP and Server 2003 so you might need to get creative in following the similar steps in Vista.

I am a huge supporter of rolling back to XP.
Now that is out the way. You do not have administrative rights to your own machine which is why you can't install.
Roll back.

I do know it *can* be installed on Vista - Office 2007 Pro is on my vista box, and it came pre-installed with a trial version of Office Home/Student.
As an example of unhelpful error messages, though...
I had a problem installing a time-change patch, the initial error messages indicated that some part of Office needed to be activated. (At the time, I only had the trial version of Office Home/Student on the system, which I didn't want to activate since I had a key for Pro hanging around) so I blew it off for a while. (time change updated - for my computer usage - is a non-critical issue.)
Then a couple later patches also refused to install, and since these were security issues, I decided it was time to figure it out. It turned out to be - of all things - a bug in the firewall preventing the patch from being applied (which has since been fixed in a later version.)
Not that I would have been able to figure that out from the original message, though! :)
All of these suggestions are good. You want to make sure that you are installing as an administrator. I understand that your profile is setup as Administrator, but it really isn't an administrator account as it was in XP. If you right click on setup and choose Run as Administrator, this will help.
Also, make sure that all of the components of Office 2007 are not present on your machine first. You may have an older copy, trial version, etc. there. Uninstall all instances and then try it again.
