What is the best system available to automate the delivery of digital products after a customer has purchased them?
I've heard the term Electronic Software Delivery or ESD for short, but how do you do it? What is the simplest, most cost effective method of sending customers to the correct download page for the product they have purchased as an automated process?

Hi Ady,
Your easiest (and best) solution is to go for an online payment system that handles this for you. In other words, it takes the payment and then directs the buyer to the correct download location, after which it sends them where you want. Additionally, you want that link to be secure, and perhaps expiring.
I would recommend you look at E-junkie, it is specifically designed for accepting payment for and handling distribution of non-tangible goods, including serial numbers, file downloads, etc.
Their cart software is an absolute doddle to install into any site, and will not ruin your design.
Here's a link to their page specifically dealing with software downloads et al.

You need to have a local agent that identifies the current hardware/software configuration (there are several ways this can be done) and connects to a service that parses this and selects the appropriate software (or nothing) automatically.
This is not a trivial endeavor and requires a lot of coordination in the product development and maintenance teams.
