Twitter : who, what & why ?
I recently read an article stating that over 40% of tweets are absolute rubbish ( like : eating a sandwich now, just woke up , etc.)
So I was wondering :
If you use twitter, what makes it worth for you to follow somebody (what is your motivation to follow a person) ?
Do you use is purely for business, or also for pleasure ?
Why should people follow you on twitter ? what kind of messages do you share (majority) ?

Why do we go to a party with lots of people we don't know out there?
We even meet some who are big bores. Most, perhaps. It is always good to get to know these folks from afar, and where one can studiously ignore...
Yet, there is always that new person - with a zany sense of humor. Or one who stays in your locality (in my case it is @powaiinfo) / city (@b50) / country(@surekhapillai) & knows a lot that u don't...
Or belongs to a diff work / hobby orbit that is immensely fascinating. Like a Cordon Bleu chef (@stevewallis), or one who adds a new word daily to our vocab (@jun6lee), or a very reachable watchable TV anchor (@BDUTT).
Even those u don't really agree with, but want to understand better - from afar (@pakidotcom)
Like all human beings, we ourselves also strive to make an impression. Not only do we want to be heard, we want to know we were heard...
Most of all - all at my own pace. With no socially well-dressed veneer required...
That is twitter. No need felt to analyze... it is like the 'fertile humus' we walk on daily. It is there, yet we accept it. Even ignore it.
I tend to only follow people who post relevant, useful tweets. The eating a sandwich bunch get unfollowed pretty quickly by me.

I use it to vent, attach links, give bulletins on safety issues, or warnings... sometimes updates on my work results or my poetry...
Mostly, I think it is a waste of effort and I am not committed to it, but I think it can be useful to use a bulletin board or 'proverbial fridge note'....
I delete anyone who has a p*rn link, and I follow discriminately, because otherwise I am just reading complete rubbish as you have intelligently defined, about whether a person found a hairnail, an irrepressible mole or what their favorite ice cream flavour was.
People should follow me on Twitter (in answer to your question) because I leave thoughtful bulletins, and don't just post meaningless trivia.

I think this is a good question for discussion.
Based on my experiences on social and business networking websites, I certainly will not classify twitter as networking site but rather stay-in-touch-with-your-friends/network website. Unlike FaceBook, ORKUT or LinkedIn, Twitter does not provide platform for creating and developing new relations but to strengthen your existing relations. You cannot do much with 140 characters. Following someone who is not previously known to you will not offer any benefit to you.
However, I consider following as advantages of Twitter:
1) It helps to stay in touch with your close and trust friends or family members or relatives. It’s an alternate to Short Messaging Service (SMS) on mobile phones. Moreover, it’s not as costly sending messages on mobile-phones.
2) It is also helpful in spreading news or messages that are of public usage. For example, message of the death of Michael Jackson or any major accident etc. You can also direct people to specific websites or BLOG and ask them to give their feedbacks and opinion as it happened with that blogger from Georgia.
My twitter account is linked with my website www.sanjeevhimachali.com and hence if I do any changes on my website, everyone who are following me on twitter get the notification.
I hope this information will be of use to you.
Regards,
Sanjeev

I connect with people on Twitter who follow me or who make interesting tweets. I don't connect with those who are there to tell me how to make money on Twitter. How many people can have that secret to making a gazillion $$ - besides I find it extremely borrrrrrrrrrrrring!
I use Twitter for business, not pleasure. I link my website there and make business related tweets or promote those I know from LinkedIn.
One value for me seems to lie in adding links via tweets that will improve the ability to find my business online.
I'm absolutely amazed that people tweet all day long. I try to tweet once a day and a few times on Fridays when it seems others I know show up, too!
Why follow me? I'll help promote your cause if I believe in it.
Thanks, Ives, for the "op" to consider Twitter one more time because I remain basically confused about it! LOL
Links:
I use it as a feed to websites, but also use it to take in a lot of tweets and see them at once to stay in touch with all my contacts, its a busy world and reading fast 20 wordys works for me.
For me, Twitter is becoming like a cell phone.
So, it does not have one singular use. I do have personal friends that I connect to via Twitter but I also follow many other people. Some of the people I follow because I am interested in keeping them in my pool of people I follow, and I use Twitter applications to segment them into specific groups so that from time to time I can monitor their Tweets and find interesting links or perspectives to topics that I am interested in.
Others are people that I follow because they have followed me. Again from time to time I will check them out and if they have Tweets that contain links or subject matter that I am interested in, I may move them into those smaller categories of followers that I may not know personally but intend to check out closer.
Yet others, I maintain a conversation with them either on Twitter or through other platform (forums, blogs, other social media sites).
Currently, my "business" use of Twitter is only at the level of research and I have only trialled a couple of Tweets with a specific marketing message. I can see potential in this avenue, but currently I am not using it as a direct business communications medium. It could very well be in the future (for me) but perhaps in an integrated fashion. In other words, it probably will become one that is integrated to other forms of communications.

I put business articles, audio, videos, and links to articles and news that I feel is business worthy.
But I have it on auto piolet right now because it's a good tool to attract possible clients/subscribers, but for the life of me, I can't see it used for anything else.

I disagree with the notion that twitter is not a networking platform. I have been tweeting for almost two years now and follow interesting people who share insightful tweets about their ideas and information related to learning, HR, careers, social media, and lots more.
I share interesting websites I am reading, some new experiences that I came across or sometimes just thoughts.
I don't really segregate twitter for personal/professional use. I build conversations with people using the @ feature and increasingly its becoming my go to resource for getting answers to questions.

I use twitter whenever I need it - business or social, without much distinction between the two. I mean, its a tool, and when I have a need, I post. When I have something to say, I say it. When I feel like reading what other people are saying, I tune in. Not a big deal, unless you make it so.
Could eat up all your time, if you read every quote from 10000 people or something, but I select who I follow by the quality of their quotes, and from their ability to "answer my questions" - which I sometimes ask of my followers.
I think that your 40% figure quoted is high, at least for the eLearning and Gaming crowd which I usually follow - nearly 80-90% of the posts I receive are on topic or very close :)
Clealy a better percentage on target than email can dream of being, whereby 97% of all emails sent are spam and of the remaining 3% about ten percent of that is relevant.

It is probable more like 60%. But that is largely about those that you connect with.
Twitter's "What are you doing?" prompt is wrong the purpose is using Twitter is to drive traffic to things you are interested in, often you own web-site.

I started on Twitter by idenitfying people there that I wanted to talk with. I followed them, then the people they talked with. I freely follow people who talk with the people I follow and those who talk with me. As a results, Twitter is a pleasure, a learning experience, a resource and honestly, a lot of fun. My time on Twitter is always worth it.

I see it more like the new messenger where "mass msg" is now officially accepted. It has traditional ingredients of the classic messenger such as the list of friends and ability to exchange quick short messages with them. The only problem I see is the slightly asynchronous communication hence once aspect that should be improved in the future. I see it more a threat to the Yahoo! Messenger and the MSN Messenger rather to anything else.

Hi Ives,
I think you are probably correct on the useless tweets. I think its higher thou. Personally I use it to spread good will and to get people to know me better. Thats basically all I do. I do sometimes post some interesting questions on there but most of the time its a business thing.
Thanks
My case - My personal twitter account (@vj1987), according to me is my own little space - like my personal blog - I tweet whatever I want to (sometimes I count from 1 to 10 one at a time), I fiercely watch the followers and whom I follow. For my organization, however, I use two different accounts (@benifys and @benifysfollows) - former for disseminating information and latter for conversation and following people (and there is never one bit of blabber on any of these).
