I am trying to build a reference section for The Social Media Playbook. Can you please share with me your favorite Social Media related books (with links) so that I can include it in my book and publish on our Web site?
This would be very helpful - its where I am going to start The Social Media Playbook blog, by honoring all the other authors out there in this space (many of which we know personally, and some of which are being emailed right now ;)

Wikinomics is a decent guide to changes with social media, even if it's a little dry and not the most inspiring business book.
Taking a step further back and understanding the role search engines play in all this, I'd recommend John Battelle's The Search.
For a precursor to social media, one written 150 years before social media existed as we know it, I'll throw out Extraordinary Delusions and the Madness of Crowds by Charles MacKay. And then there's the modern counterpart to that with The Wisdom of Crowds.

On my own bookshelf I've Shel Holtz & Neville Hobson's 'How to Do Everything with Podcasting' (amazon: http://www.amazon.com/How-Do-Everything-Podcasting/dp/0072263946/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1202356098&sr=8-1), Joseph Jaffe's 'Join the Conversation' (http://www.amazon.com/Join-Conversation-Marketing-Weary-Consumers-Partnership/dp/0470137320/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1202356153&sr=1-1) and Shel Israel & Robert Scoble's 'Naked Conversations' (http://www.amazon.com/Naked-Conversations-Changing-Businesses-Customers/dp/047174719X/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1202356253&sr=1-1).
Not so much Social Media related, but I personally think worthwhile for anyone entering the space: How to Sell Yourself to Others: Tested Roads to Business Achievements and Social Popularity By Elmer Wheeler. I was loaned a copy of this by my Granddad when I was in my mid-teens and took much of the lessons within to heart. Sadly out of print, but may be available in your local library.

"We the Media" by Dan Gillmor is a classic in the field of "citizen journalism."
Yochai Benkler's book, "The Wealth of Networks: How Social Production Transforms Markets and Freedom," lays the intellectual groundwork for the success of social media.

The Long Tail by Chris Anderson is an important starting point, along with WIkinomics, and I'm also a fan of Communities Dominate Brands.
But I wouldn't simply reference print authors. I'd also make sure all the notable, interesting, and semi-notable websites and blogs are also listed. For instance, Mashable, which is dedicated to social site news (http://mashable.com/)
I'd also echo the recommendations for Shel Holtz and Joseph Jaffe.

Hey Chris, I like Henry Jenkins' Convergence Culture, and anything by Larry Lessig to get a feel for the landscape and some of the change that's afoot.
Jon Udell is very prescient wherever he's blogging, and there are many others. In no particular order: Steve Rubell's Micropersuasion, Jarvis's Buzz Machine, Publishing 2.0, Nick Carr's Rough Type, Matt McAlister's Inside Online Media, danah boyd's blog essays, collected under zephoria/thoughts, and countless others which I consume on other days.
The book I am thinking of is called Link or Linked, can't remember which. It's about networks.

Albert-Laszlo Barabasi's Linked is a very good basic text. It's a little outdated as it largely predates social media as we know it, though it does anticipate a lot of the things we now take for granted in the web (etc.) environment.
Another key source would of course be Howard Rheingold's The Virtual Community. It also predates Social media as we know it, but I think it's pretty important to know about online community antecedents to understand social media and social networking and its potential.

Hi Chris,
You might be interested in checking out a bookstore I recently set up for charity which has some good collections of books from featured marketers:
www.ultimatemarketingbookstore.com
On a self serving side, I would like to submit my upcoming book which will be coming out next month called "Personality Not Included" to be part of your effort too. It is all about how brands need to use tools like social media to avoid becoming faceless and interact more authentically with their customers.
