According to the Acronis Global Disaster Recovery Index businesses are wasting on average 2.2 days a year on downtime! What do you think about this? What else could you do with 2.2 days?

You can read the full Disaster Recovery Index here http://ow.ly/8E9tK

Thank you all for your feedback and suggestions; I would spend the time visiting partners and customers with maybe a bit of yoga in the evening.

I wanted to close the question with a clarification of the data sample, which I hope will be beneficial, and by inviting you to benchmark your disaster recovery strategy against the research with our Compare Yourself application http://ow.ly/8VmW4

The research was conducted by the independent research house Ponemon Institute. The survey was answered by the person responsible for IT and received 6,000 responses from SMBs, across 18 countries (a 5 country increase from last year) and 15 industries. The research itself is segmented into two parts – the first half is the Index itself which measures IT managers’ and IT administrators’ confidence levels in their DR policies, procedures, technology and executive support globally. The second half of the research is broader, gauging subjects such as new technology adoption levels, amount of new data being created and the reasons why people still do not back up as well as they should do as we enter 2012.

I hope this research will help SMBs understand where they are in relation to their industry and establish benchmarks for the future.

Thanks
David

Well ... I didn't go read the article, but Acronis is a DR company, so trusting a vendors report that they are publishing to encourage the purchase of their products …may be little naïve.

2.2 days is basically a weekend – I don’t think I’ve ever meet anyone (outside of union workers), that haven’t worked through a weekend or two to help their company out – or – stayed a few hours late through the week.

People are about 60 to 70% productive on average (US, the rest of the world is less (I have managed workers in other countries)), so it doesn’t really sound like big deal to me to make up 2 days. I’d bet companies lost more productivity to the release of Skyrim (the movie industry sure lost a lot of money when it released).

PS: Yes - I think “white collar” worker do a lot of work from home after hours.

Theo - Number of sample points (who/what is interviewed in a survey) doesn't matter – it’s the quality of the sample points that are a concern. If you asked 600 men what type of lipstick women prefer, you wouldn’t have a valid survey - you need to ask women. Asking 6,000 men or 6 million still wouldn’t produce valid results.

If you do a survey of SMB, which is a broad and vague term, you need to prove the sample statistically represents the actual market.

But back to the question – I actually didn’t notice David worked for Acronis and just read it as a tidbit. Here let me answer again; I would work smarter not harder ;-)

Interesting results David. I think I would be able to find a use for the 2.2 days ten times over, but if I had to choose I’d invest it in my ongoing social media education and looking at the latest developments and applications on the market.

Randy - FYI, the research was conducted on 6,000 SMBs globally.
