The B.O.S.S. - Business Operating System for Success. Good idea?
I've been coaching and training entrepreneurs since 2006 and have noticed that they often (actually, all of them!) lack a central system from which to monitor and control their business.
So I came up with a portal/dashboard idea, using Google Docs: http://tinyurl.com/makethebossworkforyou.
The idea is to put all their strategic, tactical and operational information in ONE place, so they can easily manage their startup company.

Yes, digital dashboards are for sure the future
of management. We are setting up a large
company project that will be managed entirely
with real-time digital dashboards. On the CEO
desk and office walls will be real-time touch-
screen displays monitoring and projecting
everything.
It is the only way to go. 99% of companies don't
think this way.

I think most companies become aware of the need to centralise processes when something goes terribly wrong.
A big reason why a lot of start ups don't have this is because they can't appreciate the value until they incur a big loss... and even then... oftentimes they don't really know how to implement or they can't justify paying for it

I became a consultant for the One Page Business Plan(R) because I liked that they had software (to help ccreate a plan) and a scorecard system to monitor it onlline. It can be used 1:1 or it can be used in companies.

I agree that centralized monitoring/control/decision systems would be of great benefit to entrepreneurs.
Entrepreneurs typically have passion and great technical ability in their industry. The almost always lack core business skills such as marketing systems development and financial planning.
So a system that makes monitoring their business easier and quicker and simplifies the decision making process would be very useful. Of course, getting entrepreneurs to adopt such a system isn't so easy.

People and process yield a system. What you are espousing is a business tool. Not a system.
1. An electronic computer software package is not a system. One cannot acquire a system by acquiring computer capability.
2. One acquires a system by conducting systems analysis, achieving a design and processes by working with the people who will run the system. This is hard work and time consuming. Processes are improved and made more efficient by modifying user behavior not by automating it.
3. Once system and analysis and system design are complete one chooses tools to assist in running the system. The adequacy of a computer tool is driven by the requirements of the most efficient system design.
4. The biggest mistake implementation teams make is to believe they are buying a system when they buy a software tool or let the software drive the systems analysis process. That is like asking a mechanic to drive a wrench from New York to St. Louis. It has resulted in millions of dollars wasted and plummeting efficiency in many organizations, large and small.
5. It is necessary to design a system and processes unique to the company to meet user requirements before going shopping or designing computer tools. If you do not you will be pigeon-holing your company into a COTS mentality and become a slave to the company or the programmer that owns the source code. If you want anything changed it costs a big buck and major inconvenience.
