I work quite a bit with big fast food chains. To answer this question, I put myself in the consumer's shoes. So...
I visit fast food chains because they...
* ... don't make me feel bad about eating what I like.
* ... don't waste my hard-earned cash.
* ... always pace it to my needs and lifestyle - i.e. a quick bite or more leisurely breakfast while reading the papers.
* ... offer me choice without confusing me.
* ... have something for everyone in my group.
* ... taste great.
* ... allow me to indulge without breaking the bank.
* ... let me feel like I'm spoiling myself without going OTT.

Consistent food and more consistent advertising.
Think about it. When you are asked to go out for dinner to a nice place, chances are you will think of a local sitdown restaurant to recommend. If you are asked to pick up a quick burger, an amazingly high percentage of the time you will think of McDonalds. You may not end up going there, but they will cross your mind.
It's called "top of mind" and that is exactly where McDonalds wants to be.

I think fast food chains sell taste and convenience. The other half of its success lies in their marketing strategy.
Due to the convenience factor and the fast pace of life in the modern world, places fast food on the regular dining choices for more and more people.
A huge part of fast food success also lie in their marketing strategy. Ever wondered why fast food chains have branches practically everywhere? Answer is easy, because this is part of their marketing campaign. High visibility and global recognition is the ultimate theme of fast food chains.
I agree with most of the previous posts. Consistency is a very important element, especially when referring to the McDonalds giant, they don't seem to over-react and cut, cut, cut as soon as sales trend down!
All the cuts lead to is a disappointed consumer and then more cuts, this causes a cycle of poor service, dirty restaurants and bad food quality, not to mention turnover with a skeleton staff by this time.
People who want a quick, realatively inexpensive solution to feeding themselves and / or their family rather than taking the time to grocery shop, prepare a meal and then clean up afterwards.
Fast Food
1. Order from drive up
2. Apply condiments
3. Eat
4.Throw out the wrapper and your done.
Personally not my menu of choice.

No matter where you are, McD's is always there and its always easy to get to. Most people live in the fast lane and McD’s always pushes, quick and convenient.
Marketing to kids
Hot & Fresh food served consistently on expected time in a friendly manner at a clean environment.
From experience with working first-hand at a McDonald's as a shift manager I think the convienence that McDonald's holds really keeps them at the top of the food chain =)! Also, all of the advertising work that goes into these fast food corporations has people getting in line all the time!
