Hi Peter,
I got no experience in running a coffee shop, though I'm a coffee man and love doughnuts; I guess they're made for each other.
But there are certain thumb rules which apply to almost all businesses. Keep up the quality at all times, price reasonably and provide great customer service.
If you stick to these 3 basic guidelines at all times; there's no way your customers will be unhappy. And there's no better way to expand your clientele than to keep your current clients happy.
Good luck...to open a shop is easy; but keeping it open is an art :-)
Locate next to a Starbucks and price yourself more cheaply. It may work!
Hai Peter, My name is Rob and I'm the owner of Goet (www.goet.nu), a dutch hospitality concepts developing company (that's a mouth full). At the moment we are developing a concept simular to the one in your question. Before we start doing anything we always conduct a market survey (international). The results considering your idea are:
-Keep it simple but with high quality
-Low costs with high quality
-Good service
-Straightforward marketing and communication
-Straightforward interior design (with todays comforts like: wifi and news providing)
-Healthy
-Lunchbox take-away or delivery
I hope this will help you on your way to succes!!! You can always connect with me here on LinkedIn (Rob de Rooij, owner Goet) for some advise (for free!). A former guide and snowboard instructor.

Hello Peter,
Good luck in your journey...Although Daylight Donuts is not a franchise (they license their product), the single best thing you can do is talk to at least five existing licensees (of YOUR choosing, not the company's) and simply ask if they would do it again.
Feel free to contact me if you want to chat for a few minutes.

Peter,
Suggestions:
1. Find a location with good traffic and ease of entry/exit at the right hours.
2. Keep your fixed costs low. Nothing is worse than paying for fixed overhead and waiting for the revenue to catch up.
Good luck,

Hi Peter.
The most important thing is to find out how well their model works.
Research by talking to other Daylight owners. They can best answer your questions and tell you:
How helpful is the corporate office when you have problems or questions?
Does Daylight provide adequate training?
Do they have useful suggestions for marketing and promoting your business?
Ask what the big headaches are in the business (every business has some) and evaluate how skilled you are in those areas.
And, as Bruce suggested in his answer, would the owners do it all over again?
Best of luck to you, and let me know if I can help with any other questions you might have.
Dan
Hi Peter,
I have the unique experience of owning a coffee bar for 15 years, am a consultant and teacher and also franchised a concept in the juice/smoothie industry. If you want to set up a phone call I will give you a half hour of time to ask any questions you want.
If interested let me know,
Jack
