Yes, I think blogs are a fantastic way to communicate messages within your company, promote involvement and give personal accounts of employee history/stories. We spend a great deal of our lives at work and having a few people even write a blog and connect them to an intranet (that has standard HR stuff as well) is very beneficial.

I find that in doing this, many people often engage themselves more and try and stir up more interesting events and community involvement because the "blog" would look cool with it! Funny but true!

You also get to know people better and I love reading a Q&A done about an employee that I may not have had the time to really get to know. People also really like to come into work in the morning and read up on the latest company news. There are ways to make it humorous, informative and very beneficial to your staff. I normally pick a person that seems to get a long with the majority and ask them to write it. They end up coming up with a really great list of ideas to start writing on and I make it a small part of their week and allow them to go take photos and report back on several key meetings or events.

Unfortunately, I may read a few blogs, but don't post to them

We don't use blogs that much. We still use them a little in a wiki. We have an internal "facebook" called Beehive that we use quite a bit. Plus we all can create internal webpages to serve a similar purpose. Hope this helps!
