Does your virtual "identity" (and behaviour) differ from physical (in real time)?
How often people act differently in Virtual and Real "lifes"? Why (in our opinion)?

I am aggressive on Internet. I am not aggressive in real life.

is not.
My digital identity is just an easier way to communicate, not to hide.
My two identities do not differ much :) In both spaces I'm quite open, slightly arrogant and friendly. The biggest difference lies in the fact that online I'm a bit more assertive (the same as Ramesh (I don't think he meant "aggressive")).

Not intentionally. But I think there's an inherent difference in the situation that affects behaviour.
In a physical context, there is a greater interaction between people: body language, eye contact, facial expressions etc; that is missing in the virtual world.

No pun intended..........we've got some SPLIT personalitites here..........:-)
Nonetheless the basic nature of a person remains the same whether one is virtual or physical. Those who differ, probably are intimidated in physical life by what they are more expressive about virtually.

I think I'm pretty transparent here on LI. I have an open profile, which is quite detailed, along with a recent photo. I answer questions as forthrightly as I can in my own voice. Other people are obviously less so. Some hide behind fake profiles and cryptic names, lurk in the shadows and operate much like stalkers do in real life. It takes all kinds. The digital universe simply makes it easier for the "virtuals" to get their licks and kicks.

Does your virtual "identity" (and behaviour) differ from physical (in real time)? No.
There may be some differences due to my interaction with the media, but not a lot. Some basic personal differences will create differences in online behavior. I am an introvert and may not hang out in a group to finish a conversation just because I am not energized by the group interaction where at my desk I may stay with the conversation much longer and be more engaged.

No, I think I'm pretty much the same online as in real life, sarcastic for example.
Since the medium differs, the way people act will also differ. If you are put into a situation you have little experience with, you're likely to act differently when compared to a situation you've experienced several times.
Virtual Reality quite often relies on text and emoticons to relay emotion, while non-verbal communication is - believe it or not - a huge part of the way people communicate in real life. All those non-verbal signs you "read" when meeting in person are missing from the VR experience!
This makes it harder to understand the other party, while easier to "fake" something should one want to. Hence, even if one aimed for a 100% resemblance of their real life in VR, it would fail due to missing a number of ways to communicate we use in RL.
My point is : even if you act the same, you'll be "read" differently.

Not particularly.
The thing about the web is I will be more firm, but also more sensitive that any world out of place can and WILL be misinterpreted.
It is OK to focus on different parts of our identity, but not to have false ones. For instance a comedian may focus on certain aspects of their personality on stage, and of course at work we focus on certain facets of our selves and at home focus on other facets. We don't want to hug the boss as much as we do our families, people may get ideas...

I would say yes and no. My personality is the same throughout the sites on which I spend time working or enjoying myself or learning. I think many of us have an identity on a site for a pasttime or passion like, stamp collecting or antiques, or jokes, or gaming, or what have you. Our personality might differ from our business profile and that is not 'fake' in itself, simply enjoying the company of like minded individuals with whom we share cultural references.
I am told that I'm a lot more joyful in person than I am in writing. I guess it may be because I don't indulge in smileys or emoticons in writing as I'm old school for that aspect and prefer to do things the old way.
I often am amazed at the things I retain about people I know online for one reason or another like birthdays, family situations, education and travel, and yet, I've never met them in person. For me, it's a bit easier forming friendships with like minded individuals online for shared interests, then, if we happen to be geographically close, we can meet. Some of the 'normal' ways of meeting friends, like the schoolyard gate when you have children, school, pottery or yoga classes, and that sort of thing aren't as easy these days when your lifestyle has changed.
I don't see anything wrong with either way, but I would say that my personality is slightly different when I'm sharing cultural references with someone. In person I would not want to leave someone out because they didn't watch Gilligan's Island reruns after school and eat dimestore ice cream cones like I did.
Ooops, doesn't sound as though I have a pat answer for that one.

I've been as careful as possible to ensure "what you find on the internet" about me is true and professional. I would be crushed if a customer or vendor chose not to do business with me because of something they found on the internet.
I think now people are just starting to see how what they put on myspace in jr. high can hurt them. Colleges are looking up students and employers are looking up applicants. That pic of you flipping the bird with a lampshade on your head is not going to do you any favors.
Your virtual identity and your perceived identity make a BIG difference down the line.

I write as i talk and think as I write... Of course if one is an enigma in real life than it is perfectly natural to be equally imperceptible, and illusive... I am constantly searching for similar types, there is something exciting in discovering multifaceted individuals who are extraordinarily different (positively) to the impressions that they present in their different 'forms'. That is itself the conundrum that the imagination poses. Anyone who attempts to say that they are consistent in both mediums might actually bore one to distraction as there are no surprises then. For me the fact that there can be such 'differences', is itself the joy and excitement of being unique and having the quality of just 'being'.

The thing I like about the Internet is that no one cares how tall you are or how deep your voice is: what they care about is articulacy.
I am articulate in person and online. I am learning, more and more, to write the way I speak, which is useful.
I am more aggressive online than I am in person: in person, I'm constrained by the formal manners I learned as a child, the chain of command at work, or simply nerves. Online, I'm tougher. Online makes me a person I like being and has taught me how to be less fearful of confrontation in person.
As for the rest, what you read is what you get, heaven help you.

Great question. And what a blast reading the answers. I'm in agreement with a few people who said, I am who I am. Why would you want to create yet another mask, if you already had a mask before all this online communication? It would get exhausting. I might not be online some days as much, and some days I'm online more than out and about. I say online what I might say in-person - except quotations on Twitter. I don't go around "Tweeting" quotations although, if I am giving a speaking engagement, I'll include a quotation or two. My identity is.

My goal is to NOT have my virtual and my physical persona differ in substantive ways. People's on-line personalities often seem to differ however, and frankly this troubles me somewhat. My suspicion is that people are "braver" when they are: anonymous and/or shielded by 1's and 0's. I sincerely hope that I treat people on-line pretty much just as I would treat them in person, since the alternative strikes me as, well, cowardly. (I could be wrong, though.)

No. I seek to be exactly the same whereever and whatever role I am playing. Whether I'm The President of Yurikon, an Information professional, a friend, a fan of animation...I'm exactly the same.
One of the reasons I always signed my real name to all my online communications has been so that I will never say anything I won't stand behind.
Why do people behave differently? Because anonymity means that people can't be traced, they can't be held accountable and they cant be controlled. Also, with lack of visual cues, certain behaviors fail to translate to text, so aggressive misinterpretation of text is common.

Not at all I am ME anywhere I am, online or offline I even talk the same way I write
I think people can be different online than offline as they feel safe behind their screens in their own comfort zone they can just turn their computer off if they dont like anything or they feel threatened so they get like a bravado persona (In a nice way just to open up and be themselves online)

Internet can be a place to expose hidden aspects of your personality, good or bad, suppressed or dormant, bring out the best or worse.
It all comes down to the company you keep. Linkedin is a professional community with educated professional members, so attitude is similar.
Gamebusters kick a@# is an online gaming community of teenagers with too much sugar and lots of hormones, so attitude is alike.

Hi Jonas.
Really, it depends on the "mood" of the situation. Meaning, not my "identiy" per se, but my behavior, if you will, depends upon how formal or casual the real life situation or online forum is.
My philosophies, my beliefs, my identity, don't change. My manner changes in real life, like I said, depending upon the situations, as it may
in online forums.
Thanks!

I'm much cuter in person. ;-)
Seriously, I am probably a bit more outgoing online than in person. I majored in English in college and am comfortable expressing myself in writing, with time to consider what I am going to say. Also, I enjoy doing research (at least in a small way) and being able to fact-check via Google or other website(s) and back up my statements with a link, when applicable, makes me more willing to offer up opinions to an audience of (mostly) strangers.
