provide the resources needed to lieutenants and staff for the job you ask of them;
lead by example;
have an open door policy for any employee, although you may then delegate out the handling of the issue brought before you.

Hi Yuriy,
In these tough times of economic turmoil and business uncertainty where crucial decisions must be taken diligently, business leaders and great managers/CEOs should work coordinately looking for viable solutions for this crisis.
Emotional Intelligence in managers, leaders and CEOs from my personal perspective is a desired competence in these times of economic turmoil and is a sort of behavioural vector that could be defined in function of these different dimensions:
HUMILITY: When a courageous leader has taken a mistaken decision, he/she should be the first one in recognizing such mistakes and in assuming the consequences and repercussions of his/her decisions. Conversely, when this leader excels and succeeds after implementing a crucial business decision, he/she is humble enough to recognize the merits and commitment of his/her team instead of recognizing only his/her own merits.
VISION: It is a characteristic attribute of enlightened leaders who consistently have an inspiring vision and the ability of pursuing it enthusiastically, passionately and responsibly the decisions that must be taken, the projects that must be developed and the teams that should be managed to transform this vision in projects that deliver innovative products/services, better marketing positioning, financial profitability for the long term and better competitiveness to face a highly uncertain and volatile business outlook.
ACCOUNTABILITY: A great CEO excels for his/her integrity and sense of purpose in virtue of which he/she becomes in an ethical reference for the whole organization; he/she stands as a role model to be admired and followed in times of crisis and uncertainty; he/she will assume his/her responsibility about the repercussions, effects and consequences regarding to whatever decision he/she has taken. He/she is a faithful guardian of the values, beliefs and principles that are inherent to the corporate culture.
DISCIPLINE and PERSEVERANCE: When a courageous leader take decisions in an highly conflictive context, he/she is concious not only regarding to the different repercussions, courses of action and consequences that such decisions can bring to his/her organization. He/she has the right mix of working experience, behavioral competencies, thorough knowledge and emotional intelligence required to overcome any kind of difficulties that may be raised during his/her tenure, by designing alternative courses of action if needed, making the required adjustments when convenient and motivating continuously to his/her team, workgroup and/organization although he/she may have in any moment reasonable doubts about what to do, how to do it and when to do it.
INTERPERSONAL SKILLS: When a CEO realizes that is relevant, pertinent and necessary, he/she will identify the convenience of being supported by strategic coaches or consultants, and helped by initiatives in change management to mitigate the negative repercussions of disruptive change, that should be communicate it properly, and thereby, make sure that this initiative will be successful by assuming that from his/her role of leadership he/she has the willingness to learn from this experience, to communicate it effectively to others and to recognize so, that such a change is an opportunity for encouraging professional growth and assure long-term enterprise viability.

The most important attributes of good leadership have to do communication (intrapersonally and interpersonally):
1) Keeper of the Vision that contains the highest values and mission of the organization and clearly communicates that vision so that all are moving in the same direction and stay of track with those values.
2) Inclusive Communicator. Empowers those one serves by including team members in communications that involve the group. Asks for input and opinions and fosters ownership.
3) Compassionate Problem-solver. Deals with the inevitable bumps in the road through communication before they become more serious or chronic problems.
4) Integrity and strives for impeccability. Honors all agreements, compacts and deadlines, and renegotiates with not possible. Modeling this inspires others to do the same.
5) Spirit of Service and the ability to set ego aside. Letting go of the need to be right and has or develops the ability to laugh at oneself and not take oneself too seriously. This shows strength of character instead of the weakness in holding on to ego. Constantly looking for opportunities to give others recognition so they shine is also an important part of this.
I hope you find this helpful, Yuriy!
