Not sure what you mean by 'portfolio career.' Perhaps you could clarify your question. Just making a rough guess here: are you suggesting adding a career objective section to your LI profile?

I just don't think the kind of career path, or lack thereof, you describe will cut it in this competitive job market in which employers are so focused on hiring people who are perfect matches with their wishlists. To me it speaks to someone in survival mode rather than having a genuine career plan and path mapped out.

A portfolio career can be more than a career of multiple part time jobs. It can also include a variety of ways to make money within the context of the skills a person already has. A teacher may tutor as a second source of income, for example, or write a book in his/her field of expertise, or even take a summer job doing something completely different.
I can't find the blog I read recently, but it said that creating a portfolio career is something that anyone over 50 should consider. Having several sources of income can certainly help people sustain themselves when the time between jobs can be lengthy.
I heard someone say that having a single source of income these days is as risky as putting all your money into one stock. That certainly makes sense to me.
And in terms of job seeking, having a variety of skills and experience to call upon can't hurt. It may also give the job seeker more confidence and more flexibility to choose a great next career when they are not looking out of desperation.
