Can you refer me to someone who is successfully operating a social enterprise that trains low-skilled people to work in the enterprise and become self-sufficient?

I want to learn from others who have accomplished this so that I can develop a business plan for a social enterprise in my community. At this point, talking to someone in any type of enterprise, anywhere in the country would be helpful. Thanks!

Hello Jeannette,
Below is the link to an excellent program that is successful in your area of interest. After you review the link, if interested I can help you connect with the CEO of that organization for advice. Also, feel free to invite me as an LI connection.
Regards,
Lee

In Boston, there are a number of groups doing exactly this. Idealist.org is a great resource, here is a search I ran: Nonprofit Organizations within 50 miles of boston Massachusetts United States that were posted to the site in English concerning Social Enterprise and Economic Development. The same search for your location shows a number of groups in the Chicago area. Also Taprootfoundation might be a place to find a local volunteer to help you with a business plan.

Goodwill is a good example of this -- their focus is on training people to become employable, and they use their thrift stores as training grounds for some of their clients. There are also a number of shelters that operate restaurants that are staffed by their clients -- a Google search should find you plenty of these (I know there is at least one in Washington, DC, for instance).

Hi, Jeannette - Community Gatepath in Burlingame, CA runs several social enterprises for people with disabilities including a landscaping service, a production and assembly service, and staffing services. They were part of the original portfolio of the Roberts Enterprise Development Fund, and are a terrific example of a local org that has this down.

I worked for them several years ago. The CEO is Sheryl Young and you can feel free to tell her that I referred you.
