Have you ever donated money to charity? If yes, why? And if no, why not?
I am doing this survey to understand donor behaviour.

Yes all the time. If I belief in the charity(or involved in the charity) I am willing to donate more. Also if it is easy, I donate to 2 charities through my payroll deduction at work. I also volunteer my time as well.

Alpna,
I have donated money to a charity—yes, because of the opportunity I see that I can make a difference.
You also said you want to understand donor behaviour. Donors are primarily interested in one of four things:
• Accomplishments (what did you do with money?)
• Opportunities (what can you do with the money?)
• Acknowledgment and recognition (Did I make a difference?)
• Efficiency (Can I trust you with the money?)
Every donor activity your non-profit performs should center around one or more of these points. If it does not, you are missing the mark. They are the driving factors that influence all donor behaviour.

All of the above but mostly just because someone asked me to.
Yes for the following reasons:
Lifeboats - because I used to spend a lot of time on the water and was always grateful that they were there if I needed them
Animals - because we have pets and many are less well looked after than ours
Cancer - because we are all at risk
Children - because we have children and many are less well of than ours

Yes, because death squads are unlikely to come and drag me away in the night. I have food, water, and shelter. So many don't.

I'd like to do more, but it's always hard to know which ones and how much.
I donate clothing and goods to the Red Cross, and was a volunteer and board member at Dress for Success Morris County for several years.

I do--and I've volunteered and worked for non-profits, too!
I choose the non-profits I support based on their mission; and I choose how I support them based on what seems most effective for the non-profit and for myself. (For example, do I have skills they can use?)
For those like Kristin who aren't sure where to donate, take a look at the linked websites. Charity Navigator rates the larger non-profits; GuideStar and the Foundation Center have information about more non-profits, including their Form 990s (the form US non-profits are required to file with the IRS to maintain their non-profit 501(c)(3) status), but don't rate them.
Financial statements aren't the only criteria for choosing which charities to support. Check out the websites--and especially the annual reports--of non-profits you're considering to learn more about what they do and their results.
I once volunteered for a non-profit before I donated to them; it was a good way to find out how effective they were. And one charity I now support I learned of while volunteering with another!

Yes. Because with the right charity (as in responsible and accountable), a little bit of money put to the right use can be just what someone needs to get over the next hurdle in their lives.
I have donated money because it makes me feel good. Have been given a lot in life so it feels good to be able to give back as well
Yes I donate all the time. I give everything I can such as money, clothes, food, school fees...It's due to my beliefs. I strongly believe in the Bible's principles. And I think it is a duty for each and eveyone of us to do so. It's so good when helping or positively changing one's life.
Yes...I have donated many times to various NGOs.

Since I have started working I have been associated with a couple of charitable organisations. I regularly make donations to these institutes. I do not see donation through the prism of "charity" as I feel the concept of charity has been misused in India, in particular. I rather see this as an opportunity to make meaningful social contribution through active participation & donation to benefit those who are less privileged in life, for no fault of theirs! Additionally, I am life member to these organisations and hence participate in the decision making process, thereby contributing to the need wholesomely.
