What are the best SEO tools for keyword analysis?
Specifically, I'm looking for a free or low cost tool that will assess keyword density as well as whether users are searching for particular words at all. I'm considering Wordtracker but am looking at all options. Thanks in advance.

I was just reading a great post about this on the Boagworld site (they talked about it in their podcast, and on the site there is an excellent post and tons of great comments). They mention several of the tools listed already, but more interesting to me was the general approach and steps in the overall process of increasing a site's visibility and findability.

Not *exactly* what you're looking for but will give you good insight into what you need.
Wordtracker is a good paid option - Keyword Discovery too...
For free Google Suggest works well.

I use nichebot. It's got Wordtracker stats built in plus TONS more. It isn't free - but it's VERY REASONABLY PRICED and these guys continue to amaze me in how they over-deliver value added options, content, etc.
There's also a new one out there called Market Samurai. Don't mind the name - even in it's "infancy" it is one heck of a robust tool.

HubSpot offers keyword analysis to track search-engine rankings for specific keywords, their search volume and their difficulty, and identify the best keywords to optimize your site around. The best part is that the software will look at your site and compare it to the first 10 listings in Google to give you a difficulty score of how hard we think it will be to rank on the 1st page for that keyword so you don't waste time trying to optimize for unreachable keywords. You can check out the free tool - Website Grader, but the full version has a monthly subscription.

I use keywordtopia.com and https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal
Beth,
If cost is a concern, you should definately start with Google's Keyword Tool at https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal - this will not only allow you to search the volume/popularity for keywords/keyphrases; but it will also enable you to put in a specific URL (of your competitors or top ranking site) and its gives you a target list of keywords/keyphrases for that particular site.
You may also want to try Google Suggests at: http://www.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=106230&hl=en
As you're typing into the search box it offers relevant suggested search terms in real time...
One another useful technique is doing in a search (in Google and/or Yahoo) and on the bottom of the page it reads: Also try: than it lists other search phrases, which are clickable links that bring you to search results for those suggested keywords....you should also focus on these "Also try" keywords/keyphrases.
Hope this helps.....

Hi Beth
I'd recommend Wordtracker for keyword research - it's worth paying for - and on the free side:
SeoQuake to look at keyword density, and other useful SEO data, of websites.
You might also want to add SEO Browser and Link Diagnosis to get a fuller picture of the world of SEO...

There are very few free keyword density tools out there, but I found a decent one at seobook.com. The URL for the density analyzer is:
http://tools.seobook.com/general/keyword-density/index.php
If you go to http://tools.seobook.com, you'll find just about every tool imaginable to help you do SEO research. Besides finding out keyword popularity, you can do extensive competitor research and more. This is a comprehensive site with links to just about any tool you could need to do effective SEO.
