A blog will reinforce your keywords, give your website constant updates which the search engines love, you can ping your blog and update to multiple websites, you can bookmark individual entries on bookmarking websites for exposure, traffic, backlinks and search engine recognition, it will help personalize and brand your website as well as give you more avenues for advertising and promotion, there are many "blog communities" and directories where your blog can be listed to increase recognition, traffic and build links...I'm sure there's more... it's also my understanding from reading forums that Google has been responding favorably to blogs in their search engine results. (I did read once that testers believe Google preferred Wordpress - don't know how accurate that is. I have a small blogger (Google) blog - which I heard wasn't search engine friendly - but it's been coming up in search engine results and I've had a couple hundred visitors (maybe because it's new). I definitely see a spike in traffic when I bookmark an entry. I am not an SEO expert or anything - I just read a lot - but I would definitely recommend it.

It is extremely effective. My blog, http://www.avocadoconsulting.com/marketing/ has helped me get a lot of search engine traffic on very good keywords for my business.
As an online business coach, adding a blog is one of the first things that I recommend to my clients who want to get more targeted search engine traffic.

Blogging is an SEO Machine.
It's pretty simple.
A good SEO strategy involves targeting a large number of keyword phrases. Every page on your site lets you optimize around another keyword phrase. A blog allows you to create a lot of pages on your site very quickly.

Very effective. Do SEO for it, regularly post your stories, promote them and have yet another source of 1) links to your site, 2) customers feedback
If you have a great writer in your team, who can engage readers, your site is 100% winner.

Hi Menachem, I hope all is well. As the others have mentioned blogging is very effective SEO wise. My site recently went through a bit of a dip traffic wise but since blogging a bit more regularly my traffic has restabilised and infact fact increases bit by bit as I add more posts which I'm very happy about as I have a specific process which I can do which I know will increase my traffic.... the next problem is finding the time of course :-)
The SEO benefits from blogs are two fold I believe. Firstly if you craft your blog post titles descriptively to contain your main keywords (or related... Google is able to spot word relationships) and have a sprinkling of your keywords through the blog post itself you should get decent rankings in Google. This will be true at least for a while, as Google favours new fresh content. My posts have often been listed top 5 in Google for words which appear in post titles within 2 or 3 minutes of me pressing the publish button on Wordpress. After a couple of days I often find that posts drop back a bit and article pages or other more established blog posts (with links) move back up the rankings. This is direct traffic from search engines who index the blog post content itself and hopefully like it.
The 2nd benefit is of course related to links. I'm not really talking about links from blogs directories, listings etc... they are good but function the same as website directories in the sense that you have to go and seek them out. Links you can get from other blogs which 'like' your content is I believe the main benefit SEO wise of having a blog. These are the type of links which just build up over time without your intervention if you have really good blog content (and you do don't you...).
Not only do these links boost the ranking of your blog but they do of course boost the overall importance of your website as a whole too. Google prefers blogs which stay focused and on topic (as much as possible) so rather than targetting your blog for a massive amount of keywords I would aim to stick with a common theme such as search marketing, web design etc. When your blog starts to attract links in from other blogs related to these topics your homepage won't have to work as hard to get ranking on your industry related keywords because after finding lots of links with your blog titles in them (which more often then not will contain your main keyword variations somewhere in them) Google will find a common theme throughout your site.
The SEO benefits of blogging can be increased if your posts cover the 'hot' topics of the day and thus are being searched for a lot. Many bloggers regularly use Google trends and the Google Adwords Keyword research tool to find out what people in their industry are currently interested in.
