Amazon.com help/tips?

I have a question about Amazon.com and rankings. I know there are various "tricks" you can do to get a higher ranking... but I'm a little confused by recent events. Yesterday my book got listed. I immediately did a search on "LinkedIn" and it was #5. Then, a few hours later I did a search and it didn't show up at all. Then today I did a search and it was #8.

First, why the fluctuation?

Second, how can I get it to be, and stay, first?

TIA :)

Amazon Sales Rank depends on other books being sold in that category. If people buy other books with lower rank than your book, your rank may go down. If people buy your book, it may go up, displacing whoever was #7 or #6 or #5. It happens. It's okay.

You can get it to be first by drumming up some marketing buzz and getting people to buy the book. Links from your blog, seminars and other events, that sort of thing. As for staying first? Sustained promotion _and_ good content will keep you up there for a while, but you can't expect to stay there forever...

Your question reminds me of questions about how to effectively perform search-engine optimization without paying for it.

Since the true answer to this kind of question is worth millions, nobody in his right mind is going to tell you the answer free of charge. There will be answers free of charge. But usually, these are answers from people struggling to find the answers themselves. I.e., they share information online in the hope they will all learn from each other.

To learn how to make SEO work, I had to spend many hours researching, thinking, and testing. I did succeed. But it really takes an enormous amount of time and effort, and all you will get on this site is a pointer in the right direction. You'll have to do the work yourself or pay someone to do it for you.

In my humble opinion.
