How did you find your financial advisor?
I have been operating under the assumption that most people find their financial advisor through a referral but a recent study indicates that only 22% of American millionaires found their advisor via a referral. Whether you are a millionaire (yet) or not I am interested to hear how you came to work with your current advisor.

The first financial advisor mostly is nobody but your CPA and then after a while you outgrow him and that's where the search starts...I've not outgrown my CPA yet, as am a millionaire on his way to be ;-)

Mike,
I indeed found my "main" financial advisor via referral, but have really found that I need a mix of him, my CPA, other Investors, Mentors, my attorney and specialty financial products companies to carry out my true plan. How's that for diversification?
I've met a lot of unscrupulous financial advisors (and even learned about some of them the hard way), but a little trial, learning and error has gone a long way. I think the hardest thing for me to overcome with previous financial advisors is the fact that when my "solution" was put together, it always seems to be based on products from his/her company...is that really the best solution for me, or is it fattening his/her pockets.
I approach it this way: I come in the door knowing what I want to do and use the advisor to do just that: give me the pro and con advise. Then I adjust or proceed to my comfort level. When it comes to money, I want referred people around me.
Cheers from the Windy City,
Ryan
