What is the best software for authoring multimedia presentations for training programs?
We are currently using PowerPoint linked with mpeg videos but find that file sizes are large.
The presentations are often updated/customized.
My preference is to package multimedia for an executable file or at least single file.

Hi, over the past year and a half i have been creating and delivering process, sales and product training across the UK and Ireland. To nearly 8000 sales colleagues for DSGi and ive found the only tool for the job is Keynote, which is an Apple software for Macs.
Now when i started i like you was using a PC with powerpoint and found it was very poor. Constantly crashing or freezing and i was loosing hours of work, even when id finished there was problems. I also found it lacked that professional look and i constantly felt the software limited me in what i wanted to offer visually. So i did a bit of research and came across Keynote, now it will mean changing to a completely different operating system etc. But once you go Mac you wont go back, lol,,, now thats a different story.
But i found the software really easy to use and i was creating new presentations within 30 minutes. The software is in a class of its own compared to powerpoint, my presentations look so more professional. The effects and animation tools built into the software are topnotch, the way i can manipulate images and edit them is phenomenal. With powerpoint you'd find yourself editing in other software then messing about importing the files, and it would take you twice as long.
No you main expense is gonna be the hardware but the software is relly cheap Keynote comes in a software bundle for about £60 you'll get Keynote, Pages (Apple's Word), Numbers (Excel) and some other stuff. Now ill be honest with you it changed the way i worked overnight.
Also if there is any Apple stores near you for a small amount you can attend classes that will teach you how to do everything. But i did a lot of the online tutorials ( which are free ). hope this help's...

Mr. Anderson:
Depends upon how professional you want to go. Like I always say about people who want to do their own public relations - there's an old saying, someone who has themself as a lawyer has a fool for a client.
So, you'd be best to find a production house in your city. If you want to do the cheap and dirty way, you probably have Windows movie maker on your computer or you can use One True Media http://www.onetruemedia.com/

My company just licensed software that would be perfect for what your in need of. We are using it to build out custom "virtual presentations" as well as virtual press kits. Right now its still in development, but its the best thing we've seen so far. Lets connect, and i'll forward you a demo, i'll also make it available to the community once we have it ready for launch.
thanks
"Best" is suggestive, if you know Powerpoint, and are happy with the results stick with it until you find your ideal solution (at a cost and new learning curve). However change your encoding from MPEG to a different format. That will make your file sizes smaller.
I assume if you are using Powerpoint you are on a PC, and there are a lot of Multimedia based software available. But if your only problem is file size then changing your video format (from MPEG) may be the best solution.
