As was already mentioned, Audit Bureau of Circulations (www.accessabc.com/), BPA Worldwide (http://bpaww.com/), and Verified Audit Circulation (http://www.verifiedaudit.com/) are all services that magazines subscribe to in order to prove the actual number of physical copies that are sold to newsstands, subscribers, and other sources. However, they won't necessarily give you the readership information you are asking for. (The number of copies circulated does not reflect the pass-along readership, and most audit bureaus don't make any claims as to this number unless the magazine pays for that service).

Many magazines do subscribe to special readership studies which provide the demographics and number of readers you are looking for. We subscribe to The Media Audit, which is an audience survey that can tell you readership and demographics for all types of media (consumer only, I believe) in a specific market (http://www.themediaaudit.com/). Mediamark Research Inc. also does primary research on consumer media (http://www.mediamark.com/default.aspx).

If you develop a more targeted list of magazines you are interested in based on circulation (Jackie's suggested site would be a good place to start), you may want to ask those magazines individually for their own readership studies or media kits.

Best of luck!

Check out this site: http://www.newslink.org/mtopus.html. Mediabistro.com can also provide information, as well as the Audit Board of Circulations (http://www.accessabc.com). Good luck!

You should also check out the Business Publications Audit. Each Audited magazine on their file will detail out much of what you are looking for.
