Zohar, While there is an inherent potential in manipulating these social networks into business advantage... so far I am using them primarily in order to be available to ex employees and friends to assist them (especially around employment issues) in a reactive mode. Therefore, I will not be much of an help on the issue on hand. Good luck, David Furstenberg

It really depends on what you want to achieve.
LI is good to create connections in your industry, that help you in a variety of ways - providers, channels, etc.

Facebook seems to me to be more helpful in targeting private customers, but I don't have enough experience with it yet.

Because you create a dialog with people that have common interests. You can listen to what they have to say & they can hear you out. Eventually you create trust and a brand name for yourself. People will tell others about you and start following you. You become an expert which gives value to others. Some will want to buy your product or service. As Gary Vaynerchuk explains in his book "Crush It, "its a marathon and not a sprint.

LinkedIn in particular is a good place for references since most people in your network are people you actually know. A good place to get help.

Because on LinkedIn, I can:

1) Meet people who will expand my professional network

2) Answer questions and highlight my skills and perspective, drawing me to the attention of potential clients.

3) Read the answers of other people who might be doing something I need to expand my business.

Cheers,

It's all about building a network before you need it. These are the people who will be interested in what you have to offer in the future, when you need their interest. These can be contacts you've never met before but are part of groups that have the same interest (such as classical music) or contacts you have met before but want to say in touch with. Facebook and LinkedIn make it easier to stay in touch, search for those with the right interests and needs, and communicate nonlinearly.

I like the interesting discussions and links to useful articles in the various LINKEDIN groups I'm a member of. Q&A is also an excellent facility to find answers and experts.

With a sufficiently sized network, I get alerted to what I need to know without having to manually check various sources for updates in my field.

Everything depends on the type of business you are in and services you offer. Facebook is great for brands that have a passionate following or cause, LinkedIn for connecting with potential vendors or clients, and Twitter for data mining.

Hi Zohar,

I like Erica's answer. It's a great way to get your marketing messages to places other methods will not. And finding people that can help you or someone in your network.

These days, you have to go where your audience is. For many companies who sell consumer products, Facebook is that place. By having presence on Facebook, a company can find one more channel to reach them. It's also great for SEO.

LinkedIn is better for professional networking. You tend to trust someone within even a distant circle of your contacts, and are more likely to do business with them.

A good presence on either site helps promote the company/organization's image as an employer of talented individuals, who may or may not choose to, or be allowed to, show some of their personality in those venues. The networking that can happen can help with finding sales prospects, or future employees.

Facebook and linkedin are two platforms on Social Media, wherein your activity is noticed by your peers with whom you are connected. And if any of your peers write to you, then their peers too follow in the discussion. Hence it is very market promotion intensive.

All lot of the Web 2.0 tool are fairly new. Early adoption is probably only about 3 years ago. Part of these tools depend on participation by others. So, I'm not sure how LI & FB have helped my business. FB is great for connecting with others and having virtual conservation, but it is very social & not at all business oriented. Although, I do have a fan page set up for my business, and try to post to it daily even though I don't have any serious business fans. Linkedin is much more business oriented but I haven't been able to figure out how to have the same interaction that FB allows. This has been very frustrating for me. So, I poked around LI a few weeks ago to try to learn more. I ansered a discussion question to try to get started. After posting, I discovered a typo, so I deleted my answer & tried to repost. I couln't repost my answer because LI said that I had already answered the question. Hmmmm, where the conversation & interaction in that?

SM is like sex in high school. Everybody talking about it, few really doing it and even less really enjoy it.
Most of the 19 answers you got here are from SM consultants or alike. So you are preaching the converted.
The fact that 19 people answered is unusual. Most of the discussions in LI I have seen have almost zero response
Amazingly success in a SM campaign is most likely measured in how many followers I have and less on how much more sales this campaign generated. If this trend continues – there is no chance for SM.
