Who is your greatest influencer on the subject of Social Media and why?

The internet can create lots of "noise" - how do you cut through it and what did you find?

Purpose: I would like to gather and share the "movers" and "shakers" (industry leaders) in the Social Media Marketing industry and then share the compilation. If you know where such a list exist, please share.

Thanks for sharing!

My greatest influencer is dead. He died pre-Internet. But he has by far the best insight on what the Internet is all about -- and will become.

I recommend you read the works of Marshall McLuhan, starting with his book "Understanding Media".

Then, and only then, will you begin to understand social media, because the medium truly is the message.

Hi Tiffany,

I recently came across this wonderful read that includes various people and resources. One is Chris Brogan, an individual I had planned to recommend regardless. Another person who I've met via Twitter - Lisa Hoffman - is referenced as well.

The guys at Plaid, an agency in Danbury, Ct. Met these guys a couple years ago when they were doing a tour (yes, they're an agency, not a band).

Now this could be as much a comment about my own experience with social media as anything, but the blogs they run -- particularly Darryl Ohrt's "brandflakes for breakfast" blog -- have introduced me to the marketing applications (both good and bad) of practically every social media I can think of ... and even a few I can't.

Seth Godin, Jeremy Owyang, Chris Brogan, Scott Monty are social media geeks I follow. There must be more and I presume the number will grow leaps and bounds in 2009.

Frank Kern is great but not into Social media -- the guy I would chose is Stompernet member/faculty and producer of the following video on the subject: His name is Don Crowther

Good Afternoon Tiffany.

My greatest influencer was my fiance' Lois, who introduced me to LinkedIn as a professional networking site which has influenced my social networking further. She works for a company which signed her up for a Facebook account when she started there, but she manages more of her professional contacts at LinkedIn.

I found that I could use LinkedIn instead of my usual e-mail follow ups when I met new professional contacts and it helped me reconnect with others long after I had established previous contacts. There have been a number of tools added to the system and I have started and joined groups there to maintain professional contacts with a diverse set of contacts.

As for a list of movers and shakers, may i suggest this list from the wikepedia entry?

International Conference on Weblogs and Social Media
Social Media Club
Social Media Magazine Online
Social Media Age (Online Blog)
Social Networking and Media Association (SNAMA)
An Open Source Social Media Toolkit

They will be a great place to start!

Best To You,

Dennis M. Sergent
