Will history repeat?

Looking back into the human history from ancient times until today. Main innovation driving power seems to be war efforts. As many nations simply grew up its industrial might on it. UK became mighty for her colonialism. Germany precise her machinery industry since Prussian and Nazi era. USA came out of WWII as winner and without destroyed cities ans factories which helped them establish as super power. Russia power simply rise out of Stalin's German defeat.

Those history lessons though us, that world evolution and big changes was often made by conquest or war.

Many new invention such as plane, jet engine, rockets, satellite, GPS or tanks (evolve from tracked agricultural vehicles) simply came of out need for better and more effective weapons. Even internet is former cold war network to exchange information against academics and military.

So question is; can world evolve without war? Or is it inevitable part of evolution as this passion of human race to compete other parties for on food, property, resources, religion, ideals...or what ever will drive us into new world conflict?

Or is it sustainable that world stay in peace or is our peaceful era only eve of the another clash of nations and ideologies as was in 1930 for example?

Do we live in better world than our grand parents as for example in great depression in thirties when they enjoyed long term freedom but based on the economic collapse primitive drivers and unsatisfied ambitions those who doesn't enjoy good life, powerful influence rs drag the world into world war.

Would history repeat or are we able to keep piece as our predecessor in thousand years history never maintained for long time?

Clarification added 7 months ago:

The reason why I raised this question is also based on the article (by Peter Coy. Fighting the Global Slump: Less Is Dangerous. Business week.November 20, 2008. http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/08_48/b4110025367719.htm)

There is clearly said that one of the solution that took out economy from the 1929 and later crisis was demand of war production.

quote from the article:
" The lack of quick and massive intervention may have been one of the reasons why the Great Depression, which began in 1929, lingered until the outbreak of World War II revved up the war machines."

So would economy wake-up from the crisis if would not WWii outbreak and are not the impacts of these crisis one of the roots why unsatisfied people in Germany endorsed someone who they wouldn't in common circumstances.

My question is the world (people) mature enough to face off massive problems economic turmoil will bring without failing into simplified and traditional human races easy solution?

It's simpler than that. Nobody ever changes anything unless it makes them uncomfortable. If you are warm, well-fed and happy there's no need for technologies. Everything's good the way it is. Most of what we call technological advance has happened in the world's "Discomfort Belt" -- the geographic area far enough from the equator that the climate is too hostile to survive without assistance but not so hostile as to kill you outright. Areas where climate is compatible to human survival haven't needed technologies, and haven't developed as many.

And where did you get the idea that our grandparents enjoyed freedom during the great depression? Nobody that impoverished is free. Every day is spent working to make it to the next day. What's free about that?

Cheers!

have faith in history and humanity, yes it will follow similar patterns, stupid greed and ignorant borrowing/mortgaging...economic disruptions...posturing politicians and manipulating agencies....cold war, hot war...technology accelerates .. struggles to rebuild...rinse and repeat.
It is slightly possible that we are in the last phase, that the next surge of technology will lead to a singularity of technology leading to dominance of humanity by powerful smart machines but probably not. It is also possible that the war phases of this round will find us technologies to take the next phase interplanetary, colonization of the solar system.
