Should a sales superstar feel empathy for terrible salespeople? Or joy that this is their competition? Or annoyance that they have to deal with the negative effect that bad salespeople have on prospects? Or nothing?

One of my readers asked this question on my blog. It would be great if you would answer it there. http://therainmakermaker.com.

You can not change other people only your reaction to those people. We make choices by how we respond to others. My guess is if you are succeeding then you understand what it takes - so enjoy the fact that you are winning. You are only responsible for yourself.

Just being a sales superstar does not make you a superstar employee. What makes a sales superstar a superstar employee is if they are also a positive force and a leader on the sales floor. They should have empathy for those that are not achieving at their level and offer words of encouragement whenever possible. Success is contagious just like negativity can become a cancer. A sales superstar, just like a superstar athlete, has an obligation to be a positive role model.

Your fundamental attributes can be magnified in this type of wonderful predicament. If you are a nurturer you may choose to spread the skills by sharing your technique or allowing the other sales people to accompany you on calls. This type of behavior will most definitely help to bottom line, however if wont get promoted past your present boss. Or you may prefer to let the weaker salespeople eat your dust and parlay your current status into a promotion above your current boss before the market gets saturated with whatever it is your selling.

If you are ever lucky or talented enough to be found in this spot my best advise is to stop and think about where you want to be in five years first and then act accordingly.

Rick,

Never joy.

Annoyance only if those sales people do not want to get better. What good is the sales superstar in a group of terrible ones? Is she really that good? Or is it just relative.

Having been a sales manager in a past life and where I am now, I love mentoring. However, I'm not against suggesting they find a new career....one that is a better use of their skills...for their family and their employer's sake.
