What is an acceptable salary range for an account executive in the online media industry? Assuming the person is a "star"

The candidate has several years of experience and is highly qualified... what salary range would be suitable? The job functions revolve around managing advertiser accounts and growing current business.

Ben,

It really depends on the scope and function of the media outlet and the level of traffic and exposure advertisers get. A larger outlet with lots of traffic and a higher impression rate means bigger sales and a larger commission-- it means working with established, large brands, so key client services skills are worth paying extra for. If it's a small, local media brand or a startup, you may wish to front-load a decent base for the first several months, with a commission structure taking a larger role as revenue comes in. Balancing a decent base salary with a challenging-yet-fair commission structure is the best way to keep your account execs motivated.

And, obviously, where the company is based makes a huge difference-- you might be able to pay an account exec $30-40k + commission in Omaha, but that same rep will get twice that in one of the big cities.

You can search for that kind of info on some big salary sites and get averages for an area. You can also search a site like SalaryMap.com to get actual salaries as supplied by site visitors.

Full disclosure: I built and own this site and the data supplied is whatever visitors submitted so take a look at a few salary examples and a few other salary sites as you decide what the range is.
