You have to be aware of what's going on around you at all times.
You need to have contact with a wide range of communities and social settings.
You need to interact with young people and get a sense of where they are headed

Teaching in a university environment is a good setting.

Spotting a trend well, it may be too late for any one( Firm) to gain aything out of it i suppose.(Unless you are a market researcher.) Trends are set by firms who have an early mover advantage.( Read innovation/ideation) Services & Products have a certain degree of seperation wherein replication is easier in services, as compared to produtcs where its a relatively time consuming affair. One needs to be in touch with Markets more or less real time for the data feed on buyer behaviour, consumption patterns, demographics, phsychographics etc.I would agree with Toby Younis where he says one needs to predict trends, & to optimize marketing mixes to get the desired business throuhghput.I would say your research data needs to be very well laid out, structured & logical to give you a headsup on what the trends would be in the future, if you get it right you may hit GOLD. Thanks.... Ajit
