Successful Email Campaigns?

Can anyone give me an example or share with me an experience of successful email marketing campaigns for previously un-recognized product or service - (meaning the consumer / target audience had no prior knowledge of this product or service). What were the results? How long was the campaign? How did you target your audience? Why was it successful?

Sorry, I don't have any experience with this, other than with what I receive in my E-Mail. Because of the threat of viruses, if I don't know the person sending the mail, I mark it as spam, deleted, never opened and never to be read, the same thing goes for chain mail, except I just delete it and I don't block the sender. So my suggestion would be (Grass Roots), instead of word of mouth, word of E-Mail. Personal E-Mails from freinds and family have a much better chance of being read.

For one client (a musician) who had a mailing list (i.e. she had permission to email them), we opted to not send the usual highly designed HTML email, and instead send a personal text-only email. The client was very happy with the result because her fans were writing to her and the open and click-through rate were the highest we'd ever seen.

Lesson: Email is not suited for web pages. It's a personal form of communication. People respond better to personal text emails.
