How useful and effective are "link networks" for link building for SEM purposes?

What are your views on sites such as www.linkmetro.com or www.links-builder.com? Google's webmaster guidelines suggest that one should promote one's site to everyone that should know about your site and get folks to link to your site------- is promotion of one's site by participation in such platforms an acceptable and legitimate form of promotion/ link building?

Hi Manoj,

I think in general, building links to strong, authoritative, non-spammy sites will help you gain rankings in search engines. Avoid massive link exchanges or just building a page with hundreds of non-relevant links for the sole purpose of link exchanging. Try finding sites that has content that is connected to what you're promoting and have the site owner use anchor text related to what you want to rank well for.

Also, online visibility improves ranking significantly. Its not just about link exchange, but if your site url is showcased at some reputed sites then you get the ranking benefits as well.

Hi Manoj,

These are more sophisticated versions of "link farms". The major search engines all discourage them because they are attempts to artificially raise the value of a site (via PageRank or other metric) more than the site would have "naturally". Search providers see this as a manipulation or "gaming the system" and adjust their algorithms to minimize the benefit. In extreme cases they will penalize sites using farms and the farms themselves for violating their rules (look for the BMW case although this was not a link-farm issue).

I'm not saying don't do it but don't whine if Google, Yahoo or Live Search remove you completely from their listing.

Good luck,

Brian

Hi Manjo

I agree with what Brian said. You want to grow your links organically to help increase your rankings in the search engines. Authoritive or educational links would be great or links that add value to someone visiting your website i.e. quality links that they would find interesting.

Links are all about getting votes, if someone links to you, they are recommending your link as a valuable resource for others to visit.

We have an article on why linking is important that you might find of interest - http://www.com-motionuk.com/detail-102

Useless. At best, you get lots of links that search engines ignore. At worst, your site is banned and you have months or even years of work getting back into the search engines.

Google terms and conditions clearly tell you not to do this
its an effective way to have a site baned from 1 or more search engines
for a minimum of 6 months unless you have an extremely experienced SEO
to undo the damage and even then it would be like rolling a dice

Link building through link networks are a legitimate way to promote your website. Although, it can surely harm your website's PR. I would recommend purchasing one-way links from text-link-ads.com or any such other text-link-ad broking site.

In the former scenario, the quality of links will not be good enough for any purpose. Rather, you would purchase a link from a high PR and targeted website that points to your website

Hmmm...

You are on a LOT of low PR Directories Manoj... 6 Google Result pages, all results were link farms - that's 60 sites!

Of the 10 results I checked on separate pages, all were 1 or 0 for PR).

Yet you still manage a PR of 4 for your site. I would highly suggest not submitting to any more Link Farms, and get some articles written/posted (with a link to your site) or have some client's link back to you.

IRT to your specific question - I wouldn't do anything other than Business.com.

Ever.
