Using technology in creative ways to benefit at work

I am a journalist looking to cite examples of how managers/ entrepreneurs have used tech products and gadgets in an out-of-the-box manner. Would you like to share some experiences?

Please provide links where possible. Do let me know if you do not want your name mentioned if I use information provided by you.

Some examples to explain the query better:

- Using iPod as a business tool
- Social media like Facebook for branding
- Blogs for engaging different stakeholder groups
- Hiring people, but not from job sites
- Low cost buzz / viral e-marketing or e-PR
- Managing your contacts, appointments, projects
- Image management of an individual
- Market research (say, using blogs as a focus group)
- Fund raising for non-profits
- Leveraging YouTube, Flickr, SecondLife etc
- Working with key influential bloggers
- Impressing VCs
- Any e-resources which are full of knowledge & insights

Thanks in advance...

One example from your list is the use of podcasts to tell the story of the company. A friend of mine runs StoryQuest that does this for companies: collect stories, refine them and then publish them to the team or even to customers. I think this would be a great way to capture some of the fun storie of company founders or long-time employees. Senior partners at boutique law firms could use this to share their stories about the culture and founding of the firm.

Another direction could be with social bookmarking plus RSS readers as an easy way for people to share interesting work and find relevant material and people they might not be able to find otherwise. And on the hiring angle, I have read about companies using these resources to find (and verify) people with specific interests.

I think the number one technology tool for any business person is by far the blackberry, because a large part of business is based on communication, and that is the revolutionary tool for communication in the past couple years. Its not so out-of-the box anymore, but a few years ago it revolutionized business and now it is doing that for more personal communications as more and more people have them. I think there will be many new aps building on the blackberry device, especially since it is becoming more and more powerful in terms of processing power. If you are trying to get to more cutting edge technology - but still not exactly jumping out of the box, I would say web presentations are the next step, but there is lots of room to improve them too. Also, sites like: meetup.com and skype.com, linkedin.com are great. In depth on-line courses should also grow in demand, as more people travel and/or telecommute and are mobile, in an increasingly faster, more advanced society, always learning and having access to new research will be more and more important. In the end it depends on who you are working with and what technology fit is right. Hope some of that helps. You can mention me if you want.

I have equipped my sales team with video iPods before to show their potential clients our demo video. In addition, short training videos for employees can be downloaded too.

I also use social networking sites to brand our products on MySpace, Facebook, Eon, etc.

Google has a selection of collaboration tools like spreadsheets and calendars for the group to use. I actually started an event calendar for a local client to use for their city.

My favorite site on technology and how it's used in the business area is http://blog.futurelab.net.

I have photographed fragile and usually inaccessible manuscripts from private collections with my digital camera (with permission). I then use a digital picture frame to study and practice from them.

Though one can use tools and gadgets effectively to get the optimum results at work, I would say networking site like linked in would be very useful in reaching to the right type of people, creating a hype and would cover all the aspects right from recruitment to managing contacts. Above all it would be the cheapest medium which will deliver the desired results.
