How would you market an individual rep's website within a company website so that the rep gets more hits than other reps on the same site?

My daughter is selling Avon products to earn money while going to college. Avon provides her with a web site within the Avon web site, complete with CRM features (youravon.com/sbaker5583). That's all great, but she gets few hits as traffic to the Avon site is directed to the company's top sales reps, and my daughter is too new to the company to make that ranking. Plus, search engines don't find her site, they find the overall Avon site. This limits her web site traffic to individuals she personally gives the web address to. How would you market her web site to increase Internet sales if you were her?

Pam,

Your daughter needs to set up her own personal keyword-rich website that contains links to her website. The purpose of her personal website it to attract search engine traffic that she can direct to her Avon site.

For example if Avon has a skin care product that works well for certain skin conditions her website could be centered around proper skin care with links leading to the Avon product on her Avon site.

People come on the internet looking for solutions or information... and that's what your daughter needs to provide. The links below will take you to resources can show her how to do this.

Hope this helps.

Google indexes your site based on how much it changes. Put a bunch of RSS feeds on the page, google will index it rather often, thus driving search results for her site way up...

You also need to know a little about SEO - search engine optimization.

Try creating optimized online press releases to help spread the word, drive traffic to the site and gain some rapid visibility in the search engines (i.e. "Online program helps raise money for college!" or similar) with keywords linked to youravon.com/sbaker5583.

Or, search for affiliates to help promote Avon's products via email campaigns, etc. with your daugther's home page as the landing page. Shareasale and many other affiliate programs are very inexpensive to join.

There are a couple of things that your daughter can do to try to increase traffic to her site:
1. Include a link to her site as part of her email signature. I would also include a link on my AIM or other instant message account.
2. If she is on Facebook or MySpace, she should add her link and periodically post updates about her Avon products (such as monthly specials, cool products, new features, etc.).
3. She could see if her college has a "marketplace" section on their intranet or college web site that promotes businesses.
4. Let her existing customers know that she has a web site and tell them the features on the site, so they return.
5. Consider creating a blog about being a college-age Avon rep. The blog could link to her Avon site and she could write about fashion, beauty, Avon products, etc.
6. Based on either her home location or school location, see if there are any community-specific web sites (such as your town's web site). See if it is possible to incorporate a link to her Avon site within the community site.

Three observations:

1) She needs to differentiate her website from the top sales folks, if possible. Does her website offer anything unique that they can't get from the top sales reps? If not, this might not be the best avenue for sales.

2) Does Avon allow her to use her own domain as the front end while their website provides most of the functionality? This would allow you to heavily market herself without driving more traffic to the larger Avon site and other reps. Even if Avon doesn't directly support this, perhaps she could setup her own website anyway and link back when she needs it.

3) The internet should augment other sales channels, but not really replace personal connections or networks. If she sets up a station at a mall, supports school events, or hosts Avon parties and hands out business cards that offer takers a free gift or 10% off first purchase if they went to the website (or register at the website), she'd probably get quite a few more hits. She could also offer people an additional 10% for anyone that got a friend to register.

This builds up a personal network associated with the website and forms the basis for a mailing list so she can periodically reach out to selected customers with deals available on the website. The goal is to get her own, personal customer database.

Anyway, just a few thoughts - best of luck.

Hi Pam.

Have her tell her friends to chat her site up and get their friends to do the same and put links to her site in their myspace profiles.

As a college student, I wouldn't think that she is going to have enough time to run her own blog. If she has any friends that are bloggers, it would help if the could mention her site in their blogs.

Good luck to her, and you.

Regards,

George Feist
