So Just How Big is the Email Market?

I'm working on a new product for the email industry. As I charge ahead with this venture, in the back of my mind the MBA inside is nagging me to look at the market.

So where are there some good online market research resources on the email marketing market? I need answers like how many opt-in lists are out there, size of lists, value of email addresses, trends in email marketing, vendors, growth, etc.

Any good blogs, market research studies, etc. would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Peter

I recommend MarketingSherpa (link below). They have a fantastic email list themselves and the case studies they do are often amazing. They also have some benchmark guides that you might find very useful.

Also you might find some information at Email Universe. It's not updated as often as it used to be, but there is some greatr information on trends.

Suggest you look to Forrester Research and Gartner, and look at Internet Retailer.

Peter, I have worked in the email security industry for over 4 years (at two vendors). What can I tell you is that the email market has gone through a great deal of consolidation with vendors such as Brightmail being bought by Symantec, Ciphertrust being acquired by Secure Computing, IronPort being bought by Cisco and now Proofpoint being acquired. In total the acquistions are worth over $1.6 billion dollars. The market for email security was forecasted to be around $1.8 billion for 2007 ( can be higher based on source used - Gartner, Forrester, Aberdeen, IDC). Vendors like IronPort provide email security for hotmail and other managed services while Ciphertrust is focused on appliance based solutions. Vendors such as Barracuda claim to have over 30,000 appliances. There are still a number of vendors in the market including BorderWare, MiraPoint and others that provide email security and content management solutions. The interesting area of growth in this market is email archiving, content management and compliance. Additional areas of focus include unified/mixed mode communication protocols such as SIP that enable Instant Messaging, VoIP, Video over IP and Presence based collaboration. There are a number of new areas that will require additional secuirty controls as communications become more real time...
