How to leverage email marketing without spamming?

I write a blog "Lets Talk Insights", http://www.letstalkinsights.com

I need to market it for attracting readers to check it out. Email seems to be the best way to promote the blog. However sending out emails with introduction of the blog might be considered as spamming. Is there any way to leverage email marketing without spamming? what constitutes spamming and what is acceptable as email marketing?

There a whole number of ways to promote your blog without using email.

First off, compile a list of similar blogs. Then, start to follow those blogs, and make the occassional comment - where appropriate. You will eventually start to see a cross over of visitors from your external blog posts to your own site.

Secondly, look at the largescale social network sites such as MySpace and Facebook. Make your self available there and start building up friends - you can do this really easily and if you are careful you will not get black-listed or kicked out for spamming. Again you will start to see traffic move over to your site.

Thirdly, look for support groups that exist around your topic. Do the same with these as in the earlier points.

You can build up your readership, but it will take time, but those readers will be more likely to stay with you.

Good luck.

I write a Marketing Related Blog that over time has continually added users since day one. Sure it's a slow process but as more people read your posts the word gets around. Providing good content that people want is the key...

I accomplish this by being active and posting regularly, answering questions sent in from my readers, posting comments on other blogs/linkedin ;), and being active in the right social networking groups.

Other Ideas I have yet to pursue are; buying advertising space on relevant blogs, or in relevant newsletters (ie. This newsletter is brought to you by <insert name>), adwords and paid listings.

good luck

Hi Aseem,

Spam is that email which is sent without the consent of the person it is being sent to. Get some good opt in lists and use them.

In my opinion, its never a good idea to promote a blog using email marketing. You need to do all of the things David mentioned and a little more. First off, establish a regular posting cycle, put up relevant content and interact with other similar bloggers to gain awareness and people will come. Make sure you tag all of your posts correctly. Rinse and repeat is my motto.

Each person has a different definition of spam and with so much email pushing out there, its sometimes hard to fight for attention. Renting a list will almost certainly guarantee failure because of the very nature people subscribe to those lists. You will spend $$ and not see a high ROI.

Good luck.

Promoting your blog through your email marketing campaigns will only get you so far. I recommend you check out a company called Compendium Blogware who has a "keyword blogging" application that works wonders to drive traffic to your site.

I suggest that you utilize social networks to promote your blog. I have attracted over 370,000 unique visitors to one of my blogs in 8 months.
