To follow up on Paulette's answer, here are some articles with varied results:

From these articles, it seems like people are having some success with clickthroughs, but from from a consumer standpoint, I've never personally seen an ad on Facebook that is pertinent to my interests, offers something I want, or is clearly from a credible, recognizable source. Additionally, I'm not sure what kind of offer would appeal to Facebook users. That being said, if Facebook's advertising targeting and advertiser quality improved, this network could have potential.
I recently ran a campaign on Facebook for one of our high tech clients. The program was geared towards college students, a perfect audience for targeting on Facebook because you can select them down to the nth degree (age, sex, location, college, relationship status, etc.). Plus as you keep narrowing down your desired audience you can see what the universe size is. It is pretty cost effective from an awareness standpoint however our campaign saw the most clicks when we bid close to what they had recommended. For programs using Facebook social ads, I would suggest using your logo and offer inside of the graphic.

This is a great question and will follow this thread closely. I have done some facebook advertising, one hundred percent pay per click. I have had marginal success with a couple people telling me they have seen them but no direct leads generated. Feel free to message me if you have any questions or like to chat about other mediums.

I'm with a company that has many competitors in the the social network world. We happen to be looking for funding.
After talking with the investors of our competitors (who have since disappeared), it's clear that the ad revenue is not evergreen.
Talk to the investors/funders of companies in your realm before you decide to undertake development of a product in that space.

Head to google and type in:
facebook advertising click success
Check out the links.
I just finished reading an article about the success of facebook. It is actually their gifts application. The urgency in a limited number among other things is what sells it.
If I find the article again, I will clarify with the link.

By checking the links, you will notice that most, unless they have a niche, do not get good click through rates. If you have a house to sell, or a one of a kind thing, it can be a success.

Most articles that I have read recently regarding advertising on Facebook, have concluded that advertisers are having very little success, mostly because people come to Facebook for a purpose, and that is to socialize, unless you come up with a compelling offer, there's more of a chance that people will be poking friends then clicking on your ad.
Wish you luck.
I tried it for a spell. Can't say I did any better or worse than with Google AdWords. I find AdWords better though for my business only because I'm trying to reach a wider market that goes beyond Facebook.
Think of Facebook as a medium to create awareness rather than a medium to generate leads. So brand building will be a high in terms of Facebook ads.
The crowd that comes to facebook is too diverse and probably not even business inclined. They are most interested in listening and seeing than doing something in the business sense. So trying to get their audience to do something is not a wise investment.
It is possible to create a following or a mass which appeals to the youth ego in the sense of a fashion statement, new game which folks can play online, etc but for b2b it is not yet ideal.
