Knowledge Management
I am trying to get the KM initiative going in the group. I have started the K-sharing sessions already. Now, I want people to participate in these, for which I have already circulated a plan for the entire year, and also voluntarily submit the K-pieces to the knowledge database.
I want to link their participation in KM activities to the annual goal. What are the best metrics to have that could translate into an objective assessment of one's participation - both qualitative and quantitative?

The most successful approach is to NOT integrate into the performance measurement of the individual but to recognize their contribution quarterly as a prize. The url below is a presentation I gave several years ago that talks about the holistic approach to KM.

Justifying measurement and metrics within the area of knowledge management will not always lead to an direct impact of organizational performance in short run. We suggest to our clients that measurements link to either BSC or IAM can and should increase visibility and institutionalize knowledge management efforts.
For example as part of the BSC you can measure the cycle time within the training section to ensure proper use, further you can set goals as how many departments using the system throughout a specified time. Those are some examples which have a more technical approach to measure visibly in terms of usage but it is a first step to ensure company wide acceptance of a knowledge management approach.

My understanding is that you have "standalone, open and voluntary" model for driving knowledge sharing across the organization. In this model you can have KPIs only to measure knowledge contribution & usage (reading / accessing). You can also measure the quality of these conversations using owner or reader based rating.
But it will be little vague to link it to the specifics of business performance. While you continue to have this open-forum, you must have proper KM systems to make collaboration, learning and execution a integral part of the business.
There are discussed related to why KM failed and how to measure the value of KM in linkedin and knowledgeboard.com. Please search and take a look at them.
