What does creativity mean to you?

The world needs creativity. It needs inspiration. It needs a new way of looking at issues and a new way of developing.

Creativity is at the heart of humanity. It has been such since the beginning of time.

What does creativity meant to you? Be as poetic as you can be - it's how I perceive the world.

Unbridled imagination. This is something that most of us lose as we develop into adults and start working at a career or in developing "expertise" in a given area. It is also the one thing that we are born with that is quickly stifled by our educational system. Those who are able to imagine without boundaries, and who look at every situation as though it is new, tend to be more creative in their lives. When passion and sensuality (not necessarily sexuality) are added to the mix, great things are achieved, bordering on magic. These "boundary busters" are the ones who grow our civilization, the rest of us are mere spectators.

Creativity, to me, is an approach to the mundanity of life from paths that have not been taken before. This always involves risks as often, well-worn paths towards doing things are seen as more reliable, tried and tested, safe and some people would rather not reinvent the wheel. And this is probably also why some of the most creative thinkers of different times are not quite understood and are in the fringes, rather than the mainstream, because they are constantly trying to reinvent the wheel. In thinking this way, I have more respect for artists and designers who are painfully shy about their work as it is often different and precious.

Hi James,

Creativity is the opposite of replication, coming out of the routine and trying to do a thing in a new way or even doing a new thing, hitherto untried.

Creativity is simple pleasure. We reconnect with the fun of getting something that did not exist before. When we create we forget our problems, we are just being, the child comes out, we connect with ourselves and it simply feels good. Our energy pours from the inside to the outside and leaves our imprint, the object of our creation becoming an extended part of ourselves. Creativity also lives in a time and purpose vacuum. It can be quite inspirational because we feel that we are there to do something unique and it reinforces our sense of autonomy and contribution.

I agree that the world needs creativity and especially a new way of looking at issues to solve them. Fear of the unknown, fear of being wrong so often stifles creativity and nips in the bud the courage to move into a new direction...Western societies all too often teach us to conform to existing norms and processes that it becomes increasingly difficult for adults to be creative. Isn't it Pablo Picasso who said something to the effect: "every child is an artist and we teach him not to be when he grows up." ?
Creativity is also not necessarily that spark of imagination that identifies something no one had ever thought of before. It is also the ability to take existing ideas and combine them into something new (cf "COnnections" the british tv series). Albert Einstein is said to have once quipped that the secret to creativity was knowing how to keep your sources hidden.

Creativity lies in the eye of the beholder. When a young performer dances with a new pleasing motion, that is creativity which makes her a star. Ditto for the engaging way you dress, paint your face, talk, sing or write.

Professor Kano's model says that value perception is a hugely disproportionate dependent function. A small change in features of a product can disrupt the market. Customers are irrational. Netherland's Tulip mania is well documented.

At the same time, it is impossible to tell which kind of creativity will click. Some form of dances may appear vulgar to some audiences, but may attract rave reviews from others. So the mental models of the customer also matter in the equation. There cannot be anything univeraslly creative, unless it has to do with security and hunger perhaps.

The politicians have mastered the art of creative talking. They mean everything to everyone.

Hi James,

Creativity is what you do when your fly won't zip up and your first-date is at the door.

Creativity is the source of (mostly cultural, slightly genetic) mutations.
It is within the 2% that makes us "superior" to our closest natural relatives.
Personally, I found no adequate evolutional explanations to why we needed such a high level of intelligence to survive.
Roaches do not need it and they are doing better than us.
I believe we were created. God? UFO genetic project? I don't know.

Back to the real world.
Creativity is the wedge of advantages.
In most cases, it is the need for advantages that drives creativity.
Arm race is THE typical example. So is iMac, iPod, iPhone, iToilet....
Sometime, when the creativity is too-much for the time. We call them madness, like the early years of Einstein.

Clarification added June 18, 2007:

Creativity is like wind. It takes a windmill to channel it through.

Wasn't it the same old Steve Jobs when he was making out with NeXT? well, nothing too magical happened. Jobs has always been creative, but most importantly he HAS Apple's marketing and development team to realize them NOW.

If you are not an doer, your are a dreamer.
I am a dreamer for one. I dream of extending my arms and fly.......
Well, I hope there is a "doer" out there who would invent such a machine for me to soar the sky......for, say, $1.99? AA battery powered.....
Remember Las Vegas? Persist, and dreams can come true. Try, and you will get it right.

It brings us back to the Holy Grail of enterprise - execution.
To execute or be executed, that's the question.

When it comes to the tangibles, dreamers = losers.

Creativity for me is bringing something from nothing. It's the picture in your mind that only you can see, the answer to a problem that is new. Creativity is unique, spontaneous generation. I most enjoy creativity that comes from nowhere and is unsought after, innovation that just springs to mind. The best thing about creativity is that it is free and constantly available.
