I would say it depends on your job. In most cases face to face feels more personal and you can get more body language cues. However, in this day and age where everyone is trying to save money you may not have a choice.

Hi Eric,

A mixture of both, initial conversations via, for example Skype, are great, ultimately face-to-face is important.

Also it really depends on restrictions, I work with people in Oz, US and Dominican Rep, face-to-face is less often, so video conferencing is great.

Personally, rule of thumb of most benefit is to meet with people, if you can't meet them phone them, if you can't phone then email/message them.

In general, No.

Video conferencing cannot replace all in person communications. I have used some low end video conferencing for some minor level communications. Typically stuff I might do on the phone, or maybe email. BUT, if its a client. No. Video conferencing is not the way for me.

I own a public video conference site in Naples, Florida. Video Conferencing has been a around for a while, but only recently has it become good. I think a lot of professionals have been turned off to video conferencing dealing with shotty internet connections and old school ISDN calls.

Now, with bandwidth as cheap as it is and the cost of equipment coming down everyday, you can conduct a high quality call without spending an arm and a leg.

Answering specifically regarding potential employees, my response is no. For interviewing purposes, I find that tools like skype don't provide much, if any, information I couldn't get from a phone call and taking a look at someone's profile picture on LinkedIn to put a face with a name.

In my opinion, face-to-face interviews reveal a lot of information that can be used in making hiring decisions. For example: did the candidate plan ahead for traffic/parking and arrive on time? Are they dressed appropriately? How did they treat the receptionist or other people they interacted with who weren't interviewers? I believe that this information is typically as valuable as the candidate's answers, which are likely prepared ahead of time.
