HR Professionals, what services do you need from a pre-employment screening company?
I have a company that does drug & alcohol testing and background checks for employers and staffing companies. I am trying to identify needs that are not currently being met for HR professionals in the area of employee screening.

Here are some thoughts on possible offerings, if you are not providing them already:
- Drivers license verification
- Driving record background checks
- Verification of salary history
- Variable pay history verification
- Verification of military service / discharge
- Certification verification from the appropriate institution (CPA, Six Sigma, Lean Certication, PMP, APICS, CCP, PHR, etc,)
- Skills verification (such as MS Office skills)
- Language proficiency verification
- Verification of leadership positions in professional organizations stated on apllicants' resumes
Many times it isn't so much what isn't offered but the quality and speed of what is offered. If the background check isn't complete or detailed enough the information may be enough to get the person hired only to find out there was something not right in their background. So a more complete background screening that investigates if issues or inconsistencies are uncovered. Another area that isn't offered by all background check companies but would save time for the HR professionals is reference checks.
One that stands out in a big way is screening for activists seeking to infiltrate companies whose practices they disagree with in order to seek out potentially embarassing information, or disrupt the company's work.
Not familiar with all the legal issues, though I anticipate there would be many. Still, developing an effective and legally defensible screening process for this would be great. A lot of the ones out there seem to be glorified criminal background searches, and that's not what is needed.

One main need that we notice for Human Resource Professionals would be reference checks. We do provide this service with our company with a signature release. It is illegal to do so without one. Most background check companies don't normally do them for one main reason. They are not neccesary for us to complete to help the HR person because references are people the applicant put down. This meaning the applicant preset the person knowing they would give positive answers to their questions. We do complete them as a service with our company but are not neccesary.
The other main thing in a pre screening is to have a company that provides in depth searches as Debra had mentioned. There are a lot of companies that use database searches and charge the same amount. We use Real County searches straight from the courthouse. The results take 1-3 days on these because we do the actual research as opposed to someone using a database with minor results. I have noticed this helps many HR professionals with decisions on hire. If anyone has any questions please feel free to ask. There is a lot of information behind your question.
