An interesting question - it would also be interesting to know what percentage are using Linkedin effectively, rather than just posting a profile and leaving it to become dormant.

Incidently I have firm evidence but I don't think that the percentage of the workforce using linked in in the UK is very high. Probably less than 10%. Professional services and niche area seems to be best represented - but maybe because thay overlaps with the sectors that I work in.

Probably not much help - but I am looking forward to reading other answers!

Kind Regards

Allan

I conduct a presentation in the greater Sacramento region of California every 6 - 8 weeks on effective ways to utilize Linked IN during one's career search as well as throughout one's career, as a method of tapping into strategic people within one's target company list, gauging the health of a company and/or industry, developing one's 'brand' and more... and my research indicates an ever-evolving site.

Linked IN is certainly the world's largest online professional networking venue, with over 40 million "linked" professionals / members. It is rapidly growing and when I gave my presentation several months ago, the total was about 35 million. Just 6 weeks later, it was over 40 million.

So there are an ever-increasing number of professionals that are utilizing the site, with varying levels of success. Those that are most successful are those that have learned how to use it effectively. The least successful are those that merely develop a minimalistic profile and just let it sit there, without actively tapping into the site's potential.

The percentage of people that are in the workforce and actively utilizing the site is ever-changing and precise information on which fields are more represented than others is also subject to data compiled by the folks at Linked IN -- and I'm sure they track such information to some degree.

However, I have seen a wide variety of functional areas of expertise represented... Information Technology professionals, Sales & Marketing folks, Finance / Accounting people, Human Resources and Recruiting professionals, Operations, Artists, Writers, and more.

And I've seen numerous industries represented as well -- Manufacturing, Software Development, Publishing, Advertising, Consumer Packaged Goods, Aerospace / Defense, Broadcasting, you name it!!

People all over the world are connected to each other... and it is a tremendous resource. I've witnessed exponential growth in recent years and the percentage of the workforce that is connected and the variety of fields represented will grow and possibly shift with time, as people are actively connecting on a daily basis.

In other words, it's a moving target! The answer to your question may change from week to week, month to month, and year to year!

In consideration of what you do for a living, Maureen... Linked IN should continue to prove to be a very valuable tool in your arsenal of resources!

Best of luck to you!

Using Jim Wahl's numbers for Linkedin (36 million users).

36 million of 6.5 billion people = 0.55 %.
So if we would assume that ~ 50 % of people are of working age, we'd get a global about 1 %.

But there are quite a bit of differences by profession and region... :)

I think the highest percentage would have to be recruiters, followed by probably the fastest growing group; the "out of work force". And what seems to be a strong third place, if not higher, the "making this their work force".

Just 1 % of the workforce features on linkedin.com. For recruiters its a good channel for posting their requirements and headhunting.

I think the number of users would increase if there was not a fee to the user. If your unemployed, the last thing you want to do is pay $25 bucks a month to make contactsabout a job that may not pan out. Users can go to Career Builder or Monster and search for jobs free. You can search for job on this site, but when it comes to sending emails, I'm always asked to "Upgrade" and pay a fee.

I am a technology professional and use LinkedIn several times a week. The overall percentage of the US (professional, of working age, etc) is probably between 4% - 6% however I do not have any information to back-up my numbers. Based on my experience in my career most of my professional friends and business colleagues (80%+) utilize a "linkedIn presence."

The key benefits for me include:
1) An instrument to keep up with my business colleagues and friends (changing of companies, careers, promotions, etc) .
2) A way to be introduced to a person by a mutual acquaintance who is already a connection.
3) A way for recruiters and headhunters to extend job opportunities that I may not otherwise pursue or engage.
4) A manual contact database.

I believe the key fields who are more actively utilizing LinkedIn: IT industry, HR / recruiting and real estate agents.
