Are any of you facing challenges in relocation with the down turn in the housing market? Are you enhancing your relocation package any to help new hires?

(you can answer in LinkedIn, please, since my yahoo account is acting weird lately).

Yes and yes. Overall, the organizations I'm working for are upping their "temporary housing" spend while their current residences are for sale as well as pursuing the "Buy Out" option more often. I've had 4 in the past 4 months and the guaranteed buy out option which was really only to be given to sr. level candidates only is now being extended down to the local manager level.

(I am a recruiter and a recently relocated family member)
I think the downturn in the housing market has been a fact since Oct 2006. We actually relocated to Madison, WI during the past year with my husband's new company. The company would not buy us out, but did increase our temporary housing time and paid for additional flybacks/drivebacks to close on the old house. They even paid for us to move some of our items to a temporary unfurnished apartment so that we could live in the new city, but keep our for-sale house in tact. (it took some convincing on our part).

I hope that this helps to bring to light the housing issue that employees face when a buy-out is not available. Not being able to get your family settled in the new city takes a toll on the employee. We did everything we could to get to the new city as quickly as possible.
