How has the financial crisis impacted on your workplace culture?

Are you seeing a rise in resourcefulness, greater personal accountability, innovation or even optimism? Or are you seeing greater defensiveness, self-interest, aggression or anxiety? Certainly the pain felt by people who have lost money, their job or their company is very real. Is this adversity bringing out the best or the worst in the people you work with? Is it bringing out the best or the worst in yourself?

As I work in the area of professional and organisational development, I am keen to understand the significance and impact of the financial crisis on developing the kind of constructive, innovative cultures that generally help businesses perform. Will we see different rules arise in these tough times?

Hi David,

I see both; fortunately, more of the former than the latter.

We are working hard here to communicate a lot and give the straight dope. Bad news is better than no news in this kind of environment, where people will go straight to their fears if no one stands in the way.

We are also conducting a ten-part course in managing personal finances, which is certainly helping.

Of course, we are scrambling a bit in our business, but we've been fairly fortunate and thanks to our people we should come though this mess OK.

Josh.
