Investor Relations and Social Media - Tips? Questions?

I am moderating a panel on Investor Relations and social media.

If you were attending this event, what topics would you like us to cover?

While I do have a panel of experts providing add'l info and tips, are there any tips you have that I should share?

Just be careful when applying social media and social marketing in a regulated industry. This may seem like a obvious advice, but a number of companies in the financial and life science sectors have been surprised by how regulators responded to new media marketing.

Things like a quite period prior to an IPO take on a whole new meaning with social media.

I would reiterate Christian's point about the challenges in using social media in a tightly regulated environment. However, social media is going to enter into your investor relations business anyway so you had better understand it.

1. I would ask questions about how to create "authoritative resources" in social media for your investors.

Here is what I would say: You need to hold the namespaces in YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Slideshare.net, and other popular social media venues. Then you can publish investor information, presentations, calls, and videos is much the same way you do on your corporate investor relations website/page. However, it has the opportunity to reach a greater audience, where they are already seeking information, and probably for cheaper. You investors are using these channels. Make sure you have an authoritative voice.

2. What are some creative social media examples that potentially impact investor relations?

I would point to StockTwits.com

Hope this happens. Where is this panel going to be held? It should be very interesting. I think there is a lot of opportunity in this area of social media application.

Hi there,

I also ask do they go hand in hand? Investor relations is about increasing shareholder value at the loss of everything else. Whereas social media can be about increasing brand awareness. Can their two goals be aligned? I am not sure. Coming from Yahoo previously investors relations really were concerned how wall street would react, they are targeting a very educated and goal focused population. But social media appeals to the wider audience. So can they meet ? As yet I have still to see any company publish their latest result through social media.... So maybe no.

Does this makes sense?

By the way SiliconCloud are running a webinar on what you can learn from Google to grow and build your business, you might find interesting. Google has turned into a billion dollar industry by taking people online, so why not learn from them. You can check it out at: http://www.siliconcloud.com/how-to-googlize-your-business

Thanks

Patrick

New media and Reg. FD. And which companies are using XBRL, what they're doing with the technology, and how (they think) it's impacting the company's investor relations.

I'd be interested in a lot of things:
1 - How to monitor and control rumors
2 - How to monitor and control employee use of social media, specifically as it relates to SEC rules and other things affecting stock price
3 - The right way to respond to social media mentions of a company, its competitors and rumors of acquisitions, etc.

I'd be interested in hearing which investor audiences are being reached in which social media venues. Are some industries better followed on social media? Is it mostly individual investors tuning in on social media? Particular types of institutional investors? Is Facebook still an easier place to find investors?
