Accounting software question for small business owners in the US: has anyone had experience using Xero.com?

I'm interested in using Xero.com as a web based alternative to Quickbooks, and wanted to know if there's anyone out there using it?

Some of their automated transaction reconciliation features look attractive, and their simple, minimalistic interface looks REAL attractive when compared to clunky Quickbooks. I'm also interested in the ease of integrating and streamlining other AP and AR related functions using their web service based API.

They're New Zealand based, and looks like they have a decent number of customers in the UK, but I'm wondering if there are any US small businesses having success with their product. I've sent some e-mails to the company, and they claim that their system can be configured to be compliant with US accounting standards.

Your feedback would be much appreciated! Thanks!

Quickbooks has a web based alternative. An extremely dynamic product that I implemented for a business several years ago - and the 2 non-accountant owners have been very pleased with it ever since! Not sure why you believe Quickbooks is a clunker. Maybe you were working with a poorly designed chart of accounts and/or data entry consistency issues. The Quickbooks online pricing is similar to Xero. So why go with something that is unproven? You may want to take a look at Quickbooks Online. I agree that Quickbooks installed on a desktop is the least preferred solution for most small businesses with only a handful of employees.

Adding to the previous comments... QuickBooks desktop editions can be hosted, as well, making them work like an online app. InsynQ (www.cpaasp.com) is licensed by Intuit to host the QuickBooks applications, and can also provide subscription licensing for Pro and Premier versions.
