I would suggest Microsoft Office Accounting Express 2008. This is a free package which can be upgraded to the Pro version (which I am using) and you will not get any calls from a telesales team like you do with some of the other free accounting packages.

I researched this recently and couldn't find anything I liked that wasn't for a trial period only. My suggestion would be to find someone experienced in bookkeeping who can create a spreadsheet (Excel if that's what you use) customized to suit your business and your reporting needs.

Remember, you get what you pay for. QuickBooks is not expensive, and you do not have to be an accountant to understand and use all of its features. Peachtree Accounting software is a great package for a small business.

If you only need a monthly cash flow report I would connect with a undergrad accounting student from you local University. He or she can build you something in excel and you can give them business experience. It is a great resume builder, and they may be able to get 1 or 2 credits for the experience.

With the ever-increasing availability of continually developed opensource software applications, the adage of "you get what you pay for" is no longer necessarily applicable.

A good program that I myself have used to a limited extent is GnuCash, available at the website noted. The source code is available for review and modification (if you are into the programming side of things) to fit your own needs.

Also, I included a link with a brief review and description of the software and how it can easily aid you in tracking your personal or professional finances.

you can use Excel and build your own; MS works have some built in templates also for very simple stuff.
