There are many very good Canadian wines made primarily in Southern Ontario and some from BC but it really depends on your tastes as to which would be the best (for you).
I like a full bodied Cab but also enjoy a good Shiraz or Merlot. A friend says only a Pinot Noir can be great - go figure.
Part of the enjoyment is finding a wine you truly enjoy and at a great price. I've had some very good luck with the small Niagara wineries but I live in Niagara so have easy access. If you are going to Niagara, Angels Gate is superb but 20 Bees has some good buys.
For an excellent choice of food and wines, try Cave Springs in Jordan and Dave Hooper is a great wine maker.
Take the time to try different wines!

There is no such thing as "best". There are good, better and superb.
Whether California, BC, Ontario, Colorado, Australia, etc. And Oh, yeah, the frogs and dagos come up with some good stuff once in a while.
For a good Canadian red, I would look to BC, just because of the climate being more conducive to good grapes.
Take me to Miami, take me to Miami. Oh, sorry, that's the best Jewish whine....

One of the hardest things about the question is "What is best?"
Some people think only a Pinot Noir is Best. Some think Cabernet... some white.
In terms of internationally known, the climate really isn't suited for grape growing. Not a long enough dry warm season, not long enough, etc.
there are, however some great, small barrel, locally produced Ontario wines.

The best Canadian Red wine that I have had the pleasure of tasting is the 2007 Fairview Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon. Small production from Oliver BC, only 400 cases made, classic cab characteristics, beautifully balanced fruit to tannins and acidity.
I barrel samples The Wrath at Fairview Cellars as well, once in bottle it may replace the 07 Cab, I'll have to wait and taste.

The best Canadian red wine I have had is Nota Bene from Black Hills Winery in B.C. But I'm not sure of the context of your question. Are you looking for the best or a good reasonably priced red? Nota Bene is about $55 Canadian a bottle and hard to get as it is produced in limited quantities. I've tried many other more reasonably priced B.C. reds - my favorite is the cabernet sauvignon. But there are differences between vintage years even for the same wine.
Hi Paul - Although Mission Hill tends to get a lot of attention for their Oculus, I find it improves after lying down for a while, so unless you have access to an older bottle, I won't recommend that one.
Sandhill is doing amazing things these days - last year's releases of red blends One, Two, and Three were all outstanding. My favorite was the One. Any of their Small Lots program will be outstanding. Also, you can't go wrong with La Frenz's Syrah.
Deborah certainly knows her stuff and I tend to agree with her. However, I would add to her list of BC'ers with a great blend from Road 13. Their 5th Element is strong competition for Burrowing Owl's Athene which is still a little young.

NK'Mip winery in Osoyoos, BC, Canada's first aboriginal winery, has some excllent reds, including their award winning Qwam Qwmt Merlot and Qwam Qwmt Cabernet Sauvignon. (Qwam Qwmt means "achieving excellence" in the language of the Osoyoos Indian Band)
