Hi, Jane. Skill or talent? Well, let me describe how it manifests myself in my life and let others decide. Intuition shows up in dreams and in questions that I find myself asking others. Often, I will bring up a topic in a client engagement or in a personal conversation, and there will be knowing looks shared amongst the group or an odd gaze from a friend. Only later--not always, but most times--will someone "clue" me in as to the electric thing that I inadvertently touched. My belief is that this "voice" lives in everyone. So, you think that's a talent... But, on the other hand, there is a skill in working with this voice. Sometimes, I have seen people who embody this voice and ACT rather than think or ask or suggest in ways that are intuitive. The nurse--my age, large-boned, kind eyes--who was in the hospital room when my Dad passed--Kathy was her name--she did not know me. My family members left because there were things that needed to be taken care of. And so it was Dad and me in the room... on a beautiful, near-spring afternoon in Houston... with billowy clouds moving against an azure sky. Kathy found me in his room. I was feeling the warmth go out of his hands. She just grabbed hold of me. No words. This was embodied intuition. The comfort there is in the world... moved through her to me.

The skill is too recognize "Intuition", the "talent" is bringing it to life.

How many times have we heard, "I thought of that..."

I am a highly intuitive person. I believe I was born with this gift and know from my own personal experience that it may be refined and honored by practicing meditation and stilling my thoughts. Music is also helpful as is spending time connected to nature and people who share this gift.

I have also seen other people's intuitive abilities increase enormously through the practice of meditation, yoga and the repetition of mantras.

Thank you for your question, Jane.

I think we must actively refine it by often mistrusting it. Trust it, but verify, for it can just as easily lead you astray. Jason Zweig wrote a great book book on neuroeconomics (even if the title sounds like it was written by a marketing person) on how our subconsciouses often misleads us, particularly with investments:

I think it's a talent we help emerge, then refine. It seems to me that people are born with intuition. After awhile, many sense that it's something they ought not to have: it's not rational; it's not quantifiable; it's not intellectual. They're wrong, but it's hard to convince them of it.

Once they become aware (usually through observation) that well-trained intuition works and is useful, the refining process can start. For people who never buried their intuition, the trick is to keep them from overreacting to it because it can burn one out.

I think in a way it is both. We are all born with a sense of intuition but must develop that sense by trial and error, growing and learning from experience. The 'gut' feeling comes from learning to trust yourself knowing your mind and your feelings are in sync somehow and will give you the best answer if you listen to your intuition. How often we go against it only to discover later we were actually right in the first place? We tend to override these feelings, thinking them false as we might not have much self-esteem, or self-knowledge, or trust in our judgments and look to the outside for validation or permission. The more we use intuition the more it will reinforce us that on the whole it is a reliable barometer and one we should listen to more often.

I am not a believer of any man made phrase such as intuition or as dictionary describes 'understanding without apparent effort'. I think most people confuse human 'animal' instinct which exists in all of us ( and not a talent at all) and in all other organisms with some 'fancy thing' such as intuition. It is true that instinctive feelings could be stronger in some and weaker in others, just has to do with one's genome and the way mind and body are wired to be, but to define this as a talent is an exaggeration. Biologically speaking, intuition can be explained, again, as a part of instinct and it is scientific. Is it somehow paranormal or from some other entity? No, not if you have any scientific/rational background. Can you refine it as a talent that is unique to you alone? No, unless you suffer from schizophrenia or bipolar mania and you think you may have some sixth sense or out of norm intuition and capabilities others may be lacking.

Jane,

If Philosphers say: the act by which the mind perceives the agreement or disagreement of two ideas, this reflects of what Mr. George Bealer has said: The only intuitions that are relevant in analytic philosophy are 'rational' intuitions. These are intellectual seemings that something is necessarily the case. They are directed exclusively towards statements that make some kind of necessity claim. For example, a rational intuition is what occurs when it seems to us that a mathematical statement (e.g. 2+2=4) must be true. Intuitions as this view characterizes them are to be distinguished from beliefs, since we can hold beliefs which are not intuitive, or have intuitions for propositions that we know to be false.

but I also see Intution beyond an act, its more likely an apparent ability to acquire knowledge without inference or the use of reason.

Regards
Faisel

According to me, intuition is a roughly judged or quickly calculated (may be subconsciously) decision from our previous experiences and its resultant knowledge. When we talk to someone over a telephone and we feel that something is not right, the decision we have arrived on is based on the earlier experiences we might have had with that person and in our perception something is “a miss”. Same applies for people we have never met, but this time we come to the conclusion based on the tens or hundreds of conversations / interactions we might have had with other people in the past.

Being a father, I might intuitively guess if my 2-year old son is not well if I subconsciously realize that he has not been behaving the same way that he has in the past. My wife might be more intuitive because she has been spending more time with him and has more experiences on which she can rely. This solely depends upon how much each of us has learnt over the past 2 years since his birth. We can realize something is not right, but are not exactly sure what is wrong.

Knowing for sure is knowing if something is right or wrong. But intuition is realizing something is not wrong or not right.

If I base by argument on the fact that intuition is based on knowledge gathered then yes it is a skill which can be acquired and refined. If it is a skill that can be acquired then yes it can be learnt. But, as I am relying on the fact that it is a subconscious effort, it probably cannot be taught but just refined without us realizing it.

I believe it is a talent we refine. Some people just don't have much and it cannot be taught. If you could teach it I would say it would be a skill but you cannot teach intuition. However I do belive you can refine it with experiance and knowledge.

Jane:
I would say it is a bit of both, mainly a talent we refine, we are born with our intuitions or sixth sense as I call it, we can either ignore it or develop it, sometimes people choose to ignore it as they dont know how to deal with it, but also it can be acquired as a skill from our life experience where we can start telling what will or can happen as equally as having an intuition
That is why I say it can be both hand in hand
My 2 cents

Intuition cannot be taught. It is a talent which all of us have in some form or another. If we choose to, we can refine it. In order to refine it, first we recognize it and embrace it. (not always an easy thing to do.)

But, some people refine and use it better than others.

I think that intuition is something we all have. It takes each of us more or less time to recognize it. Then it takes an even longer time for us to believe in ourselves enough to trust it. I don't have a formal basis for this opinion, just a long list of past experiences where I later found my intuition to be absolutely correct.

Intuition—the ability to read into, to see through brick walls, to heed your inner voice—is not a skill that can be acquired but is an inherent trait, a way of knowing, that deepens with exposure to the world around us.

Certainly not a skill that can be acquired. It is inborn. hence calling that as a talent may not be justified. It is there or not there, hence even deveoping instinct may not be feasible. Still, even if there, we tend not to recognize it. Hence probably developing instinct is nothing but being aware of the instinct.

Intuition is an inborn sense acquired by everyone. It can be refined by deep thinking and concentration. If someone has enough patience to think over anything around in as many as possible dimensions, one can REFINE it.

you just need to FOCUS all your attention at a certain point.
Like a magnifying glass can be used in sunlight to generate flame of fire in a piece of paper!
~FOCUS~
