I had a European History professor at college who was a wizard to quickly determining who "got it" and who didn't.

He was famous for a dramatic reading of DeGaul's speech denying the UK entrance to the Common Market.

He was a friend of John Houseman (of Mercury Players fame and the Paper Chase - most recently known for his television commercials (“We make money the old-fashioned way. We EARN it” (Smith Barney)), and invited students form time to time to join the two of them for dinner.

Very memorable man. He passed several years ago.

Mrs. Meadows at my high school, has a Harley Davidson motorcycle on the roof of her house (rusting). She never told us why. She also wore presidential candidate pins on her lapels with the faces scratched off teach pin. She never told us why. She assigned chapters in an utterly stupid book on the Post Office (she taught "government) then never referred to the assignments or the book again. She never told us why. She gave each of us a different book--I got Montesque's L'esprit de Loi--about laws not being strong enough to check power so only other powers could check power, hence a tri-partite governments with executive power, checking judicial checking legislative and vice versa. She never told us why but it was these 30 different books, one for each of us, that we all discussed in class for a year.

She was the only intelligent person in the state of Virginia alive while I was there, in my opinion. I learned from her that the Americans I was growing up with did not deserve the form of government they got and were incapable of preserving it. Nothing since high school has countermanded that view.

Mr. Cornelius: 4th grade inspiration

He could type over 100 wpm on a manual typewriter. A "Richard Simmons look alike and" type personality, he inspired me as a youth, showed me I could do ANYTHING that I wanted. He was fun, spirited, motivating each and everyday. I want him to know that I have achieved my dreams, grown professionally with my skills set forth by him when I was so young, I miss him and there will never be another like him

Frank is just exceptional. He always gives you both sides of the coin: The Good and the Bad. He leads you into knowledge and learning , however let's you make the calls and business decisions. In addition, he is among the few people in Academia that treat teaching in University as a simulation of a mini society. The business plan competition is very close to what students will produce when they decide to provide a business plan for their new business.

Stanley P Copeland (he always told us the P stood for "Porteus" but I'm not so sure...) at Sir Winston Churchill Secondary in Vancouver BC, in the early 80's!

Mr. C was the best English teacher I ever had, and the whole reason I majored in English and became an English teacher and writer/editor myself!

He made us WRITE every day... "Table Talk" for ten minutes before anything else.

He paced the room reciting Shakespeare, tugging occasionally on his short, rather Shakespearian beard as he spoke... during the most intense soliloquies, his eyes glittered and his fist slammed down on the nearest desktop for emphasis every now and then... no matter how many times I see "Twelfth Night" performed, he will always BE Malvolio in my mind!

He spent as much time as possible sharing the beauty of language and literature with us, and as little time as possible hammering us over the head with the rules of punctuation and grammar.

He never just told us what to do--he always made sure that we knew WHY.

In short, he was the kind of teacher I've tried to become. Except for the beard, that is!

At our 20th reunion, I got the chance to thank him. It didn't feel like nearly enough.

My 5th grade teacher Mr. Dumler was awesome and I looked forward to school every day that year.

In college it is undoubtedly Wallace Olson, he taught anthropology, philosophy and Japanese history and culture. The man could make every class a joy to attend. He has true passion for his work.

We used to go on wildlife walks near to school, I learned how much fun and joy every animal, insect and plant derived from just being !

Took me another 25 years to understand why I am happy just being !
If I can communicate and be, I'm happy..... yeh.... there's a bit of hippy in me .... but I wouldn't want to be without it.

In high school Mr. Ed Irre, our physics teacher was GREAT! He made it real, he made it interesting and fun. Everyone in that class learned and enjoyed learning about physics, YES, physics.

In grade school my 2nd grade math teacher, whose name eludes me in a Snior moment, was quite the standout. It was early 1960's and he was a Budhist with a VW van with a peace symbol where the VW logo would go. He had long hair and a wore freaky clothes.

In engineering school Dr. Joe Prahl, in the Fluid and Thermal Sciences department was quite inspiring. For one of the most brilliant people I have ever known or met he was also one of the most accessible people you would meet. He was directly involved with NASA, as was most of the department, and later served as a mission specialist on a Space Shuttle mission, the Micro Gravity Lab. It was an honor having been one of his students.

In elementary school, we had Mrs Fryer, whose encouragement provoked in me an excitement and enthusiasm for the sciences which continues in me to this day.

In high school, Mr John Gibbons, whose approach to English and popular culture and the civilizations of the United States of America still resonates in me.

In undergraduate school, Professor Frederick Zenz, whose legendary final examination in our senior chemical engineering plant design course consisted of the simplification of a piping and instrumentation diagram and the question, "Name the Nine Muses."

Calliope, Clio, Erato, Euterpe, Melpomene, Polyhymnia, Terpsichore, Thalia, Urania.

In graduate school, Professor John Williams, who had us open our Bird, Stewart and Lightfoot Transport Phenomena textbooks for the first and last time during our first lecture.

In business school, Professor Herb Spirer, who managed to invest the subject of statistics with a vigor and intellectual character which kept us engaged through at least two semesters.

I recently completed my Masters Degree. In our program, compiled of working adults, we were lucky enough to have the same 3 professors throughtout the 18 months.
Dr. John VanVliet graduated and taught at W. Point and worked briefly under Colin Powell. This man had the stance of a big Army guy, a resounding voice, and always a smile and anecdote to share. He began every 6 week session by congratulating us on taking the steps to raise families, deal with day to day life, work and go to school full time. He complimented us when we performed well and did not scold us for not getting it or turning in a not so great paper. He expanded our minds and our imaginations. He would share real life scenarios and often play both parts in a conversation to make an example. He eased my fears because he knew with my ADD I am a perfectionist, very hard on myself, and often work better in a crisis situation. He encouraged us to push ahead even when many of us had life challenges staring us in the face threatening failure. He gave such a moving talk to the class on our last night with him I left the classroom in tears, and for once in a long while, I left feeling proud of my accomplishment.

Thank you Dr. V.

Hi Geof,
Mr. Tausek...5th grade Norton, Massachusetts.
I was very quiet and had no confidence. Mr. Tausek saw this and decided to help me.
He had me do a 5 minute oral report every week until I got over my fear of speaking out with confidence. nI gort to pick the subjects. The armadillo was the first one and the hardest.
Of course there has been no stopping me since...
