What you think about Steve Jobs "stay hungry, stay foolish" precept?

Hi all buddies,
what's your opinion about Steve Jobs speech to Stanford graduate students (14th June 2005) a.k.a. "stay hungry, stay foolish" speech?

Have you ever seen it?

Some quotations....
------------------------------------------
You have to trust in something — your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.
------------------------------------------
Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick. Don't lose faith. I'm convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did. You've got to find what you love. And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Don't settle.
-------------------------------------------
Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.
-----------------------------------------

Thx all for your attention buddies

Stay hungry, stay foolish =)

Hey Franc,

Great Question to ask, Its just like "Do you believe in yourself?"
Because whats "Jobs" is pointing at is the same, believe in our intuition, instincts, inner self, to do what we love to do.. to stop waisting time for something that's certainly not what you believe in.

Henry Ford once said: "Whether you think that you can, or that you can't, you are usually right. "

This is what it exactly is, Jobs is just insisting all of us to do what we love... what we all are crazy about.. "Just go for it!" Kind of thing...

None of us knows that how long we are going to live, can't live for century, even average life rate is now half a century. In this case how can we say that we waste our damn precious time in something that we don't really believe in.

Only way we can do the best work in any field is if we are really in love in what we are doing, we love to do, we love to improve, we love to create, flourish, and extend to the no limits.

Stay Hungry and Stay Foolish.... is a mean to say, you should not worry about anything world is following.. you should try to keep yourself from herd mentality and give your self enough space and respect so that creativity in your can blossom. My one friend puts this in a way: "Starving for Challenges" in return of which I said: "Yes and Practice your dreams bit by bit", in your life..

When we do what we are interested in, we find ourself hungry to do it more, with more perfection, with more passion and creativity, and thats what makes our work stand out of crowd. And just here being Foolish is too be enough wise to not hear or get influenced by other people's being admired of your work and start doing something more better and different by again looking in yourself and believing in your instincts.

At last I would just love to say, I Believe! I do Believe!
Stay Hungry! Stay Foolish! :)
Hope it helps Franc. Please let me know if I can be helpful.

Hi Francesco

Nice coincidence that I have also posted a question based on his commencement address a day ago with the title " Connecting the dots" or " Everything in Life happens for a reason".

To me I simply loved his entire speech. It was so great of him who has reached such a high stature to compress some of the important elements in his life and to express it to budding graduates. I guess it has got great significance for most of us.

Eventhough many of us would have gone through such experiences but when it comes from some one of his stature it feels so good and you can take a lot of positives out of life.

He dropping out of college leading him to enroll into Caligraphy classes which helped him in designing the Mac and that getting replicated in most of the PC's is a great bit of example of connecting the dots looking backward.

His Second point, Life hits you with a brick is surely true. Life is one of the best teachers. Many times you feel, why me then only u realise that you would not have been what you are,if you have not got through any of those experiences.

And "Stay Hungry and Stay Foolish" is kind of one quote which many philosophers have told in different language. But it has got greater significance as it will always keep u looking out for more as what you would have learnt in life is always a drop in the big ocean called life.

Thanks for bringing attention to this topic again.

I don't know his stuff but, IMHO the best goals/directions are stated in the positive of what you want, not what you don't want. I don't want to stay hungry or foolish.

I like this. The only thing is that it is a fine line following what you want versus earning a living. I think this is a great message to remind students to find ways of combining both ...ie do not let "dogma" become the reason for selecting a career. The goal of education should be the gain of skills and knowledge which one refines into their life vocation.

The key to applying this successful is to always be hungry to keep growing in knowledge, and never believe you know everything because new developments adds to human understanding -- "stay foolish".

Thanks for sharing this.

I think it a great message and is obviously interpreted subjectively. To me staying hungry means never be satisfied with what you are doing or have accomplished. Foolish means to have fun and when you have fun and open the windows of your mind, you can innovate, improve and explore.

As for dogma. I see it has honorable to be out of harmony with any dogma or culture that is ignorant, political, mean or stultifying.

Francesco,

I agree with much of what Steve Jobs was communicating. One's best work comes doing what one really loves to do. Staying hungry and foolish means always striving to reach that next level of excellence, be it in business or one's personal life. Being open to new experiences and ways of seeing things instead of limiting oneself to the accepted modes of operation (the dogma he mentions).

If you agree with the general theme of what he is saying, I would recommend reading some of the books by Joseph Campbell. He spoke to similar themes many times in his writings, perhaps from a more academic orientation, but nonetheless inspirational.

Regards,
Craig

I think Jobs is a living example of that approach.
Stay hungry for what you want out of life
Stay foolish by not conforming, look like a fool to the average and then excel.....

I love that speech at Stanford by Jobs. His reference to "Stay hungry, Stay foolish" has to do with our primary instincts of curiosity and bewildered. It is when we work on wiping away the layers of ego, artificial satisfaction, money, lust and greed that blur our real quest in life can we become humble enough to learn and grow. It is an eternal fascination of life and universe that we should bind our life too.

As someone one said - God created this world and said "Let's hope this works". The man above is the greatest example of staying hungry and staying foolish.

Having just read the quotations my first thought is:

Easy for him to say.

I'm thinking that many more people would have followed their dreams and found that things did not turn out as well as they did for Jobs. And I don't know if I'd be as receptive to the 999 others who followed their dreams and found themselves homeless and destitute because of it.

Furthermore, isn't this a version of "If you're a failure, you only have yourself to blame, because you didn't follow your dreams". Which is not only a horrible thing to say, but is untrue because it ignores the context of race, power, money and wealth in which people have to live their lives.

Unfortunately, this idea - that you are totally responsible for your success, and therefore your failure - is the dark-side of the American psyche.

I've read this speech and found it very inspiring. So many of us long to feel alive, stimulated, engaged, wake up motivated...there is also much interest among many in staying young. Both of these goals in life are also accomplished by the idea of "stay hungry, stay foolish", which is in a way a re-statement in the Buddhist idea of "Beginner's Mind". The reminder that when we approach life with curiosity, and a willingness to allow ourselves to be new at things, and learn and follow our interests, that we feel sparkly, vital, confident, cheerful.

So I for one, vote yes for this idea. It certainly works for me.
