Nathan, Thank you for a gentle reminder [with your question] on a blog I had been meaning to finish and post - see below. LinkedIn is a networking tool - and so, by taking basic steps you can be visible to others without it appearing that you are searching for another job. The key is really hone your whole LinkedIn profile so that you are able to 'be found' by people searching.

Nathan,

For those actively seeking employment, their approach must be more proactive and more obvious in intent, such as Contact Bob for Career Opportunities, make mention of their search in their updates and summary, etc.

The ones I think you're speaking of are the passive seekers who are currently underemployed or miserable at their work. Their presence should be more suggestive and spread the word only to those they trust through personal messages. They should join groups and participate in discussions as experts in their field. As should they participate in Q&A.

As John said, they should make complete use of LinkedIn without being blatant about their job search (still talking about the passive hunters). Their profile should be well developed and loaded with keywords and phrases, the better to attract recruiters and such.

When your clients are in the active job search, trying to keep confidentiality on LI sort of defeats the purpose.

Bob

I think the key is to optimize your LinkedIn profile so that you'll appear in searches made by recruiters and companies who are looking to hire. Identify the top keywords you want to be found with and use them liberally but logically throughout all part of your profile.

You can also participate in other areas of LinkedIn without it being obvious that you're looking for a new job:
1. Build your network by adding Connections
2. Request and write Recommendations (just do this on a gradual basis; it can look suspicious when 15 new recommendations pop up on a profile in one week)
3. Search for jobs
4. Participate in Answers to build expertise and network

If a person starts following a lot of companies, that could look suspicious to a current employer.

Besides utilzing LInkedIn according to the suggestions offered, strive to maintain your network through lunch and coffee meetings. Also during your breaks schedule information interviews to glean insights into companies you are interested in. Give something to your network in return - an industry related article they may find interesting, information about a topic they are interested in etc.
